“Every person has their place and their purpose.”

“Spare me the bullshit,” she huffed.

“Fine. He has everything coming to him, and I hope he dies a long and torturous death,” I commented casually.

“That’s what I’m talking about,” she agreed, wiping away her tears.

“Just so you know, I think you’re worth more than Applebee’s or Chili’s.”

She laughed. “I guess you noticed how that comment got under my skin.”

“You looked as if you were about to fly over the table at him.”

“Almost. Are you really going to hire a private investigator to look into Rory’s death?”

“I am—just to be thorough.” I noticed when she chewed on her bottom lip anxiously. I followed her eyes to the thumb drive on my desk and swiped it into my drawer. “You don’t need to see that.”

“But I want to. I don’t know if this sounds morbid or weird, but it’s Rory’s last moment, and I couldn’t be with him when he took his last breath. I think I need to see him one last time—walking and breathing—I don’t know.”

I shook my head. “I’m sorry, Kierra…but I can’t.”

She nodded. “It’s probably for the best. I don’t know what I was thinking. Anyway…I need to get going. The girls are probably driving Cara up the wall. Also, why did that asshole have to mention Eliza? That was such a low, unnecessary blow.”

I sighed as I contemplated whether to tell her or not. I chose the latter because I’d hate for it to come out from anyone but me.

“Because Eliza cheated on me with Mr. Burgess.”

Chapter Fifteen

Kierra

The office fell silent for a moment.

Mr. Burgess and Eliza? Why hadn’t Jonathan mentioned this before?

“You seem…distraught,” Jonathan remarked as he gauged my reaction.

“You never told me.”

“Told you what?”

“I’m sorry, Jonathan, but this whole thing feels like a pissing match between you and Mr. Burgess, and I’m stuck in the middle. It’s a clear conflict of interest.”

“Hardly,” he scoffed. “They did me a fucking favor. In fact, I sent Mr. Burgess a thank-you basket filled to the brim with luxury goods and some of the best cigars money could buy. The box was missing one, of course.”

“Did you really?” I asked in disbelief. He nodded.

Color me impressed.

“You’re such a troll.”

“Hopefully only in mannerisms and not in looks,” he replied with an easy smile. He circled his desk and approached me. I didn’t budge, not minding him in my bubble. He grabbed my hands, and we stood in the middle of his office, staring at eachother for longer than employer and employee should. “I got you, Kierra.”

I sighed, looked away from his glowing green eyes, and placed my head on his chest as I recalled how Rory would tell me the same thing when money was tight, and I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Don’t worry, I got you, Kierra.”

And he had me every…single…fucking…time.
