“And how did your talk with Grant and Casey go?” she challenged. I clammed up. “Uh-huh. That’s what I thought. I plan on talking to Kiyah before bed.”

“I haven’t had the opportunity. I’ve been running errands. By the way, I left your Plan B on your bed and a gift for you on the kitchen counter.”

“You didn’t have to get me a gift,” Kierra said excitedly, standing to her feet.

“On the contrary.”

“Watch the kids?”

“No. I’ll suddenly become a negligent parent in your absence.”

“Just as I thought,” she teased before she took off to the house. I thought it was the perfect time to call Eliza and figure out my next move.

“Hello?” Eliza purred when she answered my call.

“Good afternoon, Eliza.”

“Afternoon, Jonathan. Are we still on for me to pick up the kids at 6:00 tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Wonderful. I have a fun day planned for the four of us.”

“Good to hear. I’m actually calling because I ran into Anthony today, and he asked about Simone’s settlement.” I bristled when she smacked her lips. That confirmed that what I was about to do was the right thing. She didn’t give a damn, so why should I? “I know this might be a rhetorical question, but do you have the judgment money?”

“Why do you ask?”

“Because Anthony is threatening to put a lien on the house if you don’t pay up by the New Year.”

“He wouldn’t,” Eliza argued.

“For Simone, he would. Do you have the money or not?”

“I don’t have it, and you know I don’t.”

“Okay…will you have it by then?”

“No.”

“Okay,” I said resolutely.

“Okay?”

“Okay. I have no choice but to put the house on the market.”

“What?!” Eliza shrilled.

“Briefly, I considered paying your judgment off so that it wouldn’t affect me or the kids later on down the road, but I’d rather take the slight hit on the house.”

“Jonathan! You’re being irrational right now!”

“What’s irrational is calling the cops on an innocent mother who was shopping and minding her business.”

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“You can stay with your sister until you get back on your feet.”

“Jonathan, let’s talk about this,” she pleaded.
