I read through the book Reyn gave us again to make sure there are no surprises tomorrow, frowning when I get to the pages on discipline and release. We’ve been focused on the latter, but Reyn practically told us that reddening her arse is considered just as important. She’s healed almost completely from the lashes I gave her in the forest. If they see her unreddened flesh and decide we haven’t been doing enough to correct her, we might have just as big a problem.

I don’t mention it to the Harbinger or the others, though, deciding that she’s more than tense enough. Instead, I conjure her a bath while we pack supplies and ensure we have everything, wanting her to be as calm as possible so that she sleeps tonight. She needs to be well-rested for the trials tomorrow morning.

Grey leaves the room after dinner, telling us that he’s going for a walk. I try not to worry. If he weren’t in control today, he’d have shifted already. But we need to get somewhere that he can run and feel free, or it’s only a matter of time before he changes at the wrong time and tears someone’s throat out.

I hear Lia leave the bath after a while, and when she comes out from behind the screen, I see that she’s not covered herself. She looks awkward as she walks across the room slowly, her eyes not meeting mine or looking at Dane.

But I notice that though his back is turned and he’s pretending not to watch her, he has that spying mirror in the palm of his hand.

I roll my eyes. Why can’t he just admit he’s becoming more interested in our little human? It would make things much easier when I tell them that we aren’t taking her back home. I haven’t yet decided where we will take her, but I’m confident I’ll think of something soon.

‘Dane?’ she asks hesitantly.

I look up to find her standing at the table behind him. He puts the mirror away, catching my eye and frowning when he sees that I’ve noticed what he’s doing.

‘What is it?’ he asks sharply.

‘I …’ Her eyes flit around, looking anywhere but at him. ‘You’re the only one who hasn’t … Do you think you should … practice?’ The last word is whispered, her cheeks flushing crimson.

He regards her for a moment, and she flinches under his stare.

I watch as he swallows hard.

‘Bend over the table, Lia,’ he orders calmly, a perfectly horrifying parodic version of Reyn.

She turns and does what he tells her, bending at the waist.

‘Widen your legs.’

She moves her feet quickly, and I can’t work out if it’s in anticipation or simply because she wants to get it over with.

‘Spread yourself.’

I frown, watching her hesitate as Dane begins to make it more difficult and I shoot him a warning look.

But her hands move to her arse, and she pulls her cheeks apart, giving us an unfettered view of her core.

‘Very good,’ Dane drawls. ‘Are you ready to be released?’

‘Yes.’

‘Yes, what?’ he asks sharply.

‘Yes … sir? Master?’ she asks with a shiver.

‘Sir will do. Be still.’

He puts a hand lightly on her lower back and steps closer. His hand floats up and hovers near her opening. He takes a small, steadying breath that only I notice and touches her pussy.

He suddenly pulls away and lets her go, his nostrils flaring.

‘You did well,’ he says abruptly. ‘We’re finished.’

She straightens, looking confused. ‘You don’t want to?—’

‘We’re finished,’ he says again, not looking at her.

She nods and walks quickly to the bed, sliding in next to me and letting out the breath she was holding.
