‘I did as you asked. I got you the information you wanted. You can’t make me stay here,’ she says, looking frustrated and desperate.

Her blatant fear almost makes me smile. I wonder if she’s afraid of being caught or if it’s us.

I can’t wait to find out.

‘Pikerd only just left,’ I say to her. ‘Shall I go after him and tell him it was you who killed Yeith?’

She says nothing, just looks at me with hate.

‘Take your worn little bag and go back to your tragic little life,’ I hiss. ‘I’ll let you know what your next job for us will be.’

I see her eyes flare with fury.

‘No. I’m not doing anything more for you. I won’t.’

Before I know it, I’m grabbing her by her thick throat, but I immediately jump back with a grunt.

‘She’s got magick all over her,’ I exclaim, shaking my hand as my skin tingles and crawls. ‘She’s covered in it!’

She snorts. ‘Of course I’m covered in magick. I’m a magickal creature, just like you.’

She says it so quickly and angrily that I’m sure she would have gotten away with that explanation if I couldn’t see the terror rising in her.

What are you hiding?

I look at her with new eyes, eyes that can see the origin of what I felt. A bracelet on her left wrist.

I stare at it, and she tracks my gaze, her eyes widening as she turns to run, but she's much too slow.

I grab her, feeling for the bracelet and gripping it as hard as I can. An audible crack echoes through the room, and she gasps.

I let go, making sure I have a conjure ready as I see the troll façade melt away. Any sort of creature could be under there, but when I look, there’s just a scared-looking girl in a uniform that’s indecently too big and shoes that have already come off her feet as she shuffles back towards the door.

Then I see her face, so familiar, and almost recoil. I know this girl.

‘Harbinger,’ I whisper, and her eyes snap to mine when she hears it.

‘It can’t be,’ Kallum mutters behind me. ‘All this time … and she was right under our noses?’

She’s breathing hard, shaking her head like she can’t believe what’s happened.

Her bag falls to the floor just as she whirls towards the door to run from us.

She’s quicker now, but still not as fast as me.

I throw out a conjure, binding her as she stumbles through the door. But my magick is different, stronger than I’ve ever felt it before, and I know as soon as the spell hits her that it was too strong.

We rush after her but find her just outside, unconscious in the mud.

A guard is already standing over her, and next to him is Pikerd.

‘A human,’ he says with disgust.

‘Think we’ve found our murderer, Captain,’ the guard says as he pokes the unresponsive girl with his boot.

‘Fuck, Dane,’ Grey mutters. ‘That was quite a bolt of power.’

‘I didn’t want her escaping us,’ I mutter, not letting him know I didn’t do this on purpose.
