‘No?’ he grunts with one bushy eyebrow cocked, clearly assuming that I’m not telling the truth.

But I doubt The Cunty Trio will leave me in here now that they know who I am. They wouldn’t have meant for me to get arrested. That part was an accident. If they have half a brain between them, they’ll want me out of here so that my skill can be of use to them somehow.

I scoff at the thought. I won’t help them, not for anything.

But they don’t need to know that.

The vote will happen soon, and when the restrictions are lifted, I know they’ll leave Alcana as soon as they can. They’ll take me with them to use me, but I’ll use them instead and escape them after we’re through the Breach.

‘No,’ I say finally, my attention returning to Glowing Eyes. ‘I’ll be taken somewhere else soon, and I won’t be back.

‘What do you want from me, then?’

Tiny dark thoughts get past my defenses.

‘Revenge,’ I say. ‘Is there just one key to all these cells?’

He finally looks intrigued and nods.

‘I’ll get the cowards who beat me while I couldn’t defend myself another way, but I won’t have a chance to get the jailor. I’ll get you the key, and once I’m gone, you let yourself out, and you gut Lire for me.’

He laughs. ‘Done.’

I grin back at him and then turn to look down the row of cells.

‘Jailor,’ I yell. ‘Jailor, I shouldn’t be here! I didn’t do anything!’

I hear a clang and give Glowing Eyes a look of triumph.

‘How’d you know he’d come when you called?’

‘He’s been staying close by to play with the human once I woke. His kind always do.’

I hear the inner door open and close and then shuffling footsteps in the dark. I see a tall, muscular figure coming up the corridor between the cells slowly, and I raise a brow at the sheer size of the horned demon making his way towards me.

‘Sure you can take him? Maybe I should ask for something else,’ I quip and am met with a feral snarl from Glowing Eyes’ cell that makes my lips curl into a small smile that I quickly wipe from my face.

‘You,’ I say to the jailor arrogantly. ‘I didn’t do anything. I shouldn’t be here.’

‘I don’t give a fuck, human,’ he grinds out, but there’s a gleam in his eyes.

I was right. He’s been waiting for me to wake.

‘Did you do all this?’ I ask him, gesturing to my bruises even though I know it wasn’t all him.

He seems to puff up a little. ‘Aye,’ he lies. ‘I began your punishment early, murdering human whore.’

‘I thought it must have been you when I saw you.’ I scoff loudly with a sneer. ‘I had an old gran who could hit harder than you on her deathbed.’

I think of what else I can say to goad him, but he lets out a snarl and is fumbling with his keys in the lock before I can speak again.

That was easy. Must have struck a nerve.

I have a second to wink at Glowing Eyes’ shocked expression before Lire is in my cell, his meat hand wrapped around my slender throat.

‘Say that again, whore,’ he hisses, squeezing my neck and smashing the back of my head hard against the wall.

My vision goes fuzzy, and I’m transported to the moment with Yeith before I killed him, but the jailor doesn't have a knife on him that I can skewer him with.
