‘Don’t dwell,’ I advise. ‘We found her. That’s the important thing.’

‘Do you think he’ll let us go back?’ Kallum asks, not looking at us. ‘I mean, when we get there, do you think he’ll let us back in? It’s been a long time …’

Dane’s jaw tightens, and I know he’s thinking of all he left behind when we were one of the groups chosen to find her or never bother coming back. ‘He said that he would.’

I put my hand on Dane’s shoulder. ‘We’ve done our part. And what’s seven years, really? He’ll let us back in, and he’ll have rebuilt everything even better than it was. She’ll be waiting for you.’

Dane seems to relax a little and gives a small nod. ‘She’ll be waiting,’ he echoes.

Kallum looks around the room, his eye falling on the storeroom door. ‘Why didn’t she fight back?’ he asks quietly. ‘When you broke that bracelet, and we saw who she really was. Why did she run? She could have just killed us.’

‘I bound her as soon as I recognized her,’ Dane replies. ‘All she could do was run.’ He chuckles. ‘Her trying to flee in that ridiculously oversized uniform was the best part,’ he laughs.

Kallum joins him, and even I crack a nasty smile as I remember that look of shock and terror in her eyes when Dane destroyed her magickal artifact. Few memories will ever be as cherished by me as that one.

‘I bound her again a few moments ago,’ Dane continues, ‘just to make sure.’

I nod. ‘Can’t be too careful.’

‘So she’s safe?’ Kallum asks. ‘She can’t …’

‘Safe as I can make her,’ Dane replies, moving to the door.

‘Good,’ Kallum says, his lips turning up into a small smile. ‘I’m going to fuck her. I always wanted to.’

I frown. Kallum is the youngest of us and can sometimes get obsessive over things he desires. He was interested in her before, I remember. Back at the Camp, he’d watch her all the time in lessons. He secretly followed her sometimes, too. Dane and I share a look. We’d thought he’d be well over his fascination by now. He’s been with countless females since then. What’s so special about her?

‘Don’t look at each other like that,’ he says with a roll of his eyes, mistaking our shared concern. ‘I’ll make her want it.’

Neither of us say anything, and I sigh wearily as he takes our silence as a challenge.

He scowls at us. ‘You think I can’t?’

Dane opens the door and leaves, saying something I don’t quite hear but sounds like, ‘You fucking deal with this.’ I turn to Kallum, trying to be patient.

‘The answer is no. You know what she is, what she can do. What if even a wisp of that power gets past Dane’s binding?’ I force a laugh. ‘You won’t even have time to pull your cock out of her.’

Kal smirks. ‘I’m not asking you for permission, Grey. I was letting you know so you aren’t surprised when you find her moaning under me one night in the very near future.’

I turn away with a curse. ‘Do what you will, then,’ I snap.

‘I will,’ he says. ‘I’ve earned it.’

I stare out the window, wondering why I’m even bothering to argue with him. He might find it easy to seduce the females here, but he’s going to find the Harbinger a very different kettle of fish. I still roll my eyes, though. I thought he’d grown up at least a little since we’d been here.

I glance at the storeroom door and sigh. I should check on her. The injuries she sustained at the hands of the City Guard and in the jail were extensive for her human body.

My fists tighten as I recall the jailor dragging her small form out of the cell. When I’d seen what they’d done to her, it had taken everything in me not to bleed the jailor then and there. I hate the bitch, but she’s still one of us, and Varrik’s army commands respect.

I’d laughed aloud when Dane had said the man was dead. An incident in the jail indeed. I think I’d almost forgotten until that moment what she truly is. Like everyone else, I’d been taken in by the tiny, defenseless package. It had taken me a moment to recall that what was inside the wrapping would take its own revenge; however it could … even after Dane bound her. She’s dangerous even with Dane’s magick keeping her subdued. We need to remember that.

I grab a cup of water and open the door to her temporary cell slowly, promising myself that I won’t let my guard down here or on the road, no matter what.

She’s in the right corner facing the other wall, her knees drawn up to her chest. The sack she’s wearing is short, giving me an unfettered view of her arms and legs. They’re mottled with dark bruises like her face and neck. I step closer, noting her slow, even breathing and her closed eyes.

I watch her for a while. She doesn’t wake, so I put the cup down carefully and leave the room. I find that Dane has returned. I close the door and lock it.

‘We should have a way to keep an eye on her,’ I say.
