Pikerd looks pleased but then shakes his head. ‘Gods, I hope you washed it afterward.’

While they laugh heartily, I pass close enough to stick my blade through Berd’s neck, sinking into the dark again just as quickly and waiting for them to notice I just picked one of them off so easily.

Pikerd jumps to his feet first. ‘Berd? Berd!’

He leaps to his friend’s aid, trying to staunch the flow of blood, and while his back is turned, I take Pikerd as well. I slit his throat and steal his eye patch because I feel like it, only to find an unblemished eye beneath.

I knew it!

It’s all smoke and mirrors with this cunt.

I’ve returned to the dark again by the time Nels hears Pikerd’s gurgles and whirls around to find his captain on his knees, eyes bulging.

‘What the fuck? Who’s in here? Who are you?’

I stand behind him, waiting, watching him, moving with him so he doesn’t see me. My grin is wide and probably maniacal because I’m definitely having a grand time, seconded only by calling the Harbinger my good girl and getting kicked in the knackers for it.

Today is turning out to be the best day I’ve had in a long while. I’d love to drag this out, but unfortunately, I’m running out of time.

‘You shouldn’t have done that,’ I say and laugh at the high-pitched shriek he gives that sounds so much like his human-mocking a few moments ago.

He spins and finally sees me.

He lunges with his dagger drawn, but I’ve sparred with Nels before, and, at best, he’s only passable in a knife fight. I’m better than he is by far, and he knows it, so I’m not sure why he looks shocked when I grab his wrist and use his own arm to guide mine up to his throat. I jab my blade into his flesh, force him to his knees with it, and grab him by his hair.

‘You shouldn’t have done it,’ I say again, wrenching his head back.

‘Done what?’ he grinds out.

‘Defiled the human girl!’ I roar, fury flooding through me.

His eyes widen and flick around the room oddly. My knife presses against his throat, and I notice that I can’t see my hands even though I’m completely in the light now.

I’m invisible. Fully invisible. I file my shock away for later. I have a job to do.

‘We didn’t!’ he grunts.

‘A stick up her cunt still counts,’ I hiss.

‘We didn’t!’ he practically wails.

I let out a snarl, ignoring the hope that swells in my chest. ‘That’s not what you told Pikerd.’

‘We were lying,’ he whimpers. ‘We never. We beat her, and then she was taken to the city cells. That’s all. I swear it!’

I stare into his eyes and listen to the pathetic whimpers he’s not even trying to stifle. ‘I’d bet she never made sounds like you’re making,’ I scoff. ‘Bet she never begged you to stop nor cried tears like you are.’

The self-loathing in his eyes confirms my suspicions, and an odd sense of pride washes over me. The Harbinger is still as strong as she ever was. Ready for me to break.

I snigger as I draw my long knife through his flesh and unceremoniously cut his head clean off. It’s all done quicker than I’d like … and much faster than he and the others deserved, but it’ll just have to do.

I throw Nels’ head down and leave the room immediately, knowing that it must be time by now to grab the bags and meet the others by the dock.

I whistle a happy tune as I go back upstairs, and when I see the clock, I realize it’s only half past. I tut. Could have spent another twenty minutes making them whimper and hurt. I go back up to Dane’s apartments and let myself in.

Grey and Dane are arguing quietly, and they stop as I enter. They’re probably talking about what I said about the Harbinger, I muse. I probably shouldn’t tell them what I just did to the orcs who beat her … or how much angrier I got when I thought they’d raped her as well. They might get the wrong idea.

‘Almost time to leave,’ I murmur with a grin, grabbing the length of rope off the sideboard that I assume is for her. ‘I’ll get the Harbinger ready.’
