I look away, down into the boat, and try to forget where I am.

I stifle a yawn, and a moment later, my head falls onto Kallum’s knee. I jerk back and look up at him, but my eyes won’t focus. He’s drugged me.

Fuck.

He lulled me into trusting him to give me the pain powder I need, but he’s put something else in this one, and I took it without even thinking.

My head falls back to his knee, and this time, I don’t have the strength to move it away. I should be panicking, afraid of what he’s going to do while I can’t defend myself, but instead, I’m giving in to sleep, and I can’t help it.

A part of me is almost glad. My comeuppance for Yeith, Lire, and Golden Eyes is overdue.

Her head falls against Kal’s knee, and I watch as he takes hold of her and draws her closer with a shake of my head.

He even has the Harbinger’s defenses down.

How does he do it?

He sees me looking and gives me one of his smirks, caressing her cheek with the back of his knuckles.

‘It’s even easier than I thought it would be,’ he mutters at my frown.

‘Give her to Grey,’ I order and wince at the possessive defiance I see in his eyes.

‘No,’ he says with a cold smile.

Grey moves to grab her, and Kal pulls her close with a snarl, putting his blade to the unconscious human’s delicate neck.

I try to ignore my stomach’s lurch. If he kills her, we’re banished, and I never see my love again.

‘Try to take her from me, and none of us get to go home,’ he threatens.

‘You won’t kill her,’ Grey scoffs, and I cast him a look so he’ll shut his mouth.

He knows how unstable Kallum can be. Why is he goading him?

‘Won’t I? She deserves it for what she did. We all know it. Why shouldn’t she die for it?’

‘Because Varrik wants her back,’ I grind out. ‘Fuck, you’re a selfish cunt, you know that? Dealing with you is like tangling with an untamed beast. If you kill her, we can never go back. Is that what you want, Kallum? What was the point of all this if we don’t return the Harbinger to Varrik?’

Kal practically bares his teeth at me. ‘What I want right now is to sit with her at my feet on the fucking boat. Later, I want to fuck her. I already told you my plan.’

‘You can’t fuck her,’ I try, but he scoffs.

‘Of course I can. I could do it right now, and I’d probably even enjoy it. The only thing better than a fighter is one who’s been broken enough to lie there and take it.’

Kal rips off the cloak that’s partially covering her and strokes down her throat with the knife. Then he uses it to make a long slice in the sack from the collar. He reaches inside the rough material and kneads one of her breasts that I can now almost see.

I look away.

He laughs low and stops touching her limp body, but he pulls her closer, bending her forward over one arm to cut the rope that’s tight around her wrists. His lip curls as he sees that my eyes have already returned to him.

‘I’m not going to do anything here. The truth is, what I really want is the Harbinger screaming my name in ecstasy when she comes.’

‘We’re just supposed to bring her back,’ Grey says. ‘That was always the plan.’

His voice is that of the patient teacher, the one he’d use at the academy, but I can hear his frustration, too.
