And I didn’t like the way the sellswords were looking at her when we got here either. I’m surprised one of us wasn’t approached to sell her for an hour or two. I frown at the thought. Perhaps none of them will. There are quite a few brothels here, I’ve noticed.

But as I take in her face and body, I know that it’s inevitable.

Casting one last look at her as I walk quietly across the room, I go back through the wall to mine and Grey’s chamber.

I was going to avail myself of a female or two this evening, but for once, the need has dried up … for them, at least. Instead, I go back behind the privacy screen and rub one out into the water jug. I come quicker to thoughts of her mewling under me than ever before, and I’m finished and tucked away before Grey comes back.

I play with the idea of pouring the water mixed with my essence into a cup and giving it to her to unknowingly drink. I file it away for another time, though, instead throwing the jizz water out the window, chuckling when I hear someone walking below exclaim in disgust when they get drenched in my come.

‘Did you get what we needed?’ I ask as Grey enters our room a few moments later.

He looks almost surprised that I’m still where he left me, but he nods, putting various packages down. I errantly wonder if he’s bought her anything else to wear that doesn’t mark her as a slave. In Alcana, it didn’t matter so much because she was confined, but out here in these more lawless places, it just makes her look like easy pickings.

But he doesn’t seem to have brought back clothes at all, so I resign myself to using what will inevitably happen tonight to my advantage.

‘Did you sleep at all?’

‘A bit,’ I lie. ‘But I could use a bit more before we go down for a meal later. Did you find out when the Gate will open next?’

Grey nods as he stands with his back to me at the table where he’s laid out his purchases. ‘Tomorrow morning, a little after sunrise.’

‘Good. We should move on as soon as we can.’

‘Aye,’ Grey murmurs. ‘Too many bored mercenaries here. We don’t leave the inn tonight.’

‘Agreed.’

He looks back at me with a surprised expression on his face.

‘What?’

‘I’d have thought you’d want to sample the local brothels.’

I chuckle lightly to allay his suspicions. ‘I was going to, but they’ll be riddled here with all these sellswords’ diseased cocks. Gods only know what I’d pick up. And there’s no apothecary in fucking sight. No, thanks.’

He laughs a bit, but it sounds strained.

I look at him properly for a moment, taking in his jerky movements as he unpacks what he bought and the way his eyes are constantly moving around the room.

‘Are you all right?’ I ask, wondering if, like Dane and I, his skill is becoming more as well.

Grey was meant to be a shifter, I recall. Only he’s never shifted. I watch a bead of sweat run down his brow, and I frown.

‘I’m fine,’ he grates out as he crosses the room and lays on the bed. He heaves a sigh. ‘I’m fine,’ he says again, but it’s as if he’s telling himself that, not me.

I lie down on the bed beside him and throw an arm over my eyes. He’s not going to tell me anything. We just have to hope that he can keep himself under control if he does find his power growing.

‘Wake me for dinner,’ I murmur.

I don’t think I’m going to sleep well, but when I feel Grey nudging me awake and I see it’s dark outside, I realize I must have dozed off for a few hours.

‘Come on. Before it gets too busy.’

‘Where’s Dane?’ I ask with a yawn.

‘I knocked for him and the Harbinger a bit ago.’

Grey shifts from side to side a bit as if he’s not able to relax.
