Grey and Dane both give him incredulous looks, and he shrugs at them.

‘At least twice a week usually, but it does depend on the female. In my experience, if she’s highly strung, I’d say release her with fingers or a phallus at least once a day or allow her to spend her nights with a bull if you’re trying to breed her. If she’s docile, then perhaps once a week.’

Gwennie suddenly bucks on the table, emitting a loud cry as she comes, her legs shaking as the healer continues to pound his knobby fingers into her. He waits until she’s calmed before he eases them out with a small look of triumph. He wipes his fingers over the slave girl’s rump and pulls her dress back down, leaving her to pant over the table.

‘It’s as easy as that, but of course, I’ve had a lot of practice.’ He glances over at me, and I close my eyes quickly, my heart beating faster.

I don’t want to be on that table if he suddenly decides I’m well enough to use me to teach The Cunty Trio how to release a human. I shudder. Dane was right. Things are different now, and, at the moment, I’m not sure human slaves’ lives in the Dark Realms have changed for the better.

‘Anyway, my patient is looking much improved, and I have every confidence that she’ll be up and around within the next two days. Remember, no work or discipline. But if she becomes upset, you may call me to release her.’

I see three pairs of eyes narrow at the healer’s words, and I allow myself to feel some slight relief. They won’t let the old goblin touch me.

He notices their hostile expressions and puts his hands up in placation. ‘Gwennie can do it if you’d rather. She often helps when her brethren are brought to me, don’t you, girl? You’ve got quite good at it, haven’t you.’

Gwennie stands up and turns. Her cheeks are now as pink as her arse, and a sheen of sweat covers her brow. ‘Yes, Healer Reyn.’

He pats her head affectionately.

‘I’ll be back in three days,’ he announces, and then he and his slave are gone.

When the door is closed and bolted, I uncover my head, and my wide eyes find Dane’s. I open my mouth and close it again.

He lets out a breath. ‘Don’t worry about it now,’ he says. ‘We’ll sort it.’

‘Don’t worry about it?’ I practically shriek. ‘He said …. Did he mean that you’ll … that I’ll …’

I close my mouth and shake my head, not sure how to even put what I just witnessed into words. I’d seen humans treated badly. Of course, I had. But that was …

‘What changed while we were in Alcana?’ I find myself asking.

Dane comes back to the bed and lays on it, draping an arm over his weary eyes. ‘Humans can’t be taken from the Light Realm any longer.’ He peeks at me from under his arm. ‘You’re a commodity now. Precious and to be taken care of, especially as you’re of breeding age. Congratulations, Harbinger.’

‘We should let her read the book … so she knows what to expect,’ Kallum says, chucking it on the bed.

My eyes widen further at the title. ‘There’s informative literature written on how to take care of … what is a bull?’

Dane snorts. ‘If we don’t pass their little tests, you’ll be finding out very soon … if Rayn’s covetous eyes are anything to go by.’

I frown. ‘What?’

He sighs, removes his hand, and stares into my eyes. ‘He wants you. If we fail to convince him and the council that we’ll treat you well and breed you, no doubt you’ll be seized and either given or sold to him so that he can give you to his male human slave, a bull, to get you with child.’

I let out a harsh breath. ‘We need to leave, get to the Gate, escape from here!’

‘You can’t travel for another ten days at least,’ Kallum tells me.

I scowl at him. ‘I don’t care. Bring the root and let’s go.’

‘Enough,’ Grey sits down heavily at the table. ‘Even if it were safe for you in the Breach again so soon, I doubt we’d even make it to the Gate.’

‘You think we’re being watched?’

Grey nods solemnly. ‘We’ll need to satisfy them.’

‘By satisfying her,’ Kallum sniggers.

I narrow my eyes at him, mostly to hide the horror.
