I have to look down at the table again, breathing slowly and deeply so I don’t leap across the room, strip her, and bury my own head between her thighs.

‘Yes, we were watching. This morning, too,’ Dane finally says.

Her sharp intake of breath is the only evidence that she’s listening.

‘Why?’ she asks.

‘Because we thought it might be easier for you if it was just one of us. Gods only know why, but you’re closer to Kallum, so we decided it would be him who would try.’

‘Did he decide, too?’ she whispers with uncharacteristic vulnerability in her tone.

‘No. Just Grey and I.’

She looks relieved.

‘We were watching because he’s dangerous, Harbinger.’

She looks despondent. ‘Aren’t we all?’

Dane’s jaw ticks. ‘You aren’t. Not at the moment. Not while you’re so tightly bound.’

He stands up and walks to her. ‘Look at me.’

She does as he says, tilting her head back to search his eyes as he stands in front of her. His fingers twitch, and I know he’s trying to stop himself from grabbing her.

‘You might as well be human, Lia. You’re nothing without it.’

She flinches, and I feel an inexplicable urge to grab Dane by the neck and rip out his throat for making her feel so small even though I did the same to her at the bathhouse … how many days ago was that? I don’t know. The days and weeks are all melding together on this hellish journey.

I shake my head, drawing myself back to the present.

‘I don’t say this to be cruel.’

She scoffs.

‘But Kallum is … Kallum. If he sets his mind on something, very little can thwart him. If he wants to … go further with you, he will. It won’t matter if you want him to stop. You won’t be able to make him. That’s why we were watching.’

She stares up at him. ‘You’re wrong. Kal wouldn’t do anything I didn’t want. I trust him more than I trust you.’

‘Then it’s a good thing we’re keeping a close eye on you,’ Dane says coldly.

He sighs as he returns to his chair, sinking into it.

‘Regardless of his motivations, Kallum has got further with her than I have,’ he says, ignoring her now.

‘So?’

He turns to me. ‘So, if he can do it in the bed, he can do it with her bent over the table. I can petition the council to see us earlier. We can leave this place earlier.’

‘What’s the hurry?’ I ask sullenly, staring at her huddled form while she does her best to ignore our hushed voices that her human ears won’t be able to hear.

He gives me a look. ‘You aren’t as good at hiding it as you think you are. I know you’ve shifted while we’ve been here. I’m not a fool, Grey. You were a hair’s breadth from leaping at her throat a few moments ago. We need to get you out of here as badly as we do her. The next world should be at least partly wilderness, I’m told. Once you’ve had a run, you’ll feel more yourself.’

I prise my eyes away from her, half tempted to tell Dane he’s not as perceptive as he thinks he is because I don’t want to kill her. I wanted to kill him, and I won’t feel myself until the beast is satisfied.

My eyes widen at my own true thoughts, and I surge to my feet before I do something I’ll regret and get us all slain in this fucking town.

‘Kallum’s been gone ages,’ I mutter. ‘I’m going to find him.’
