Lifting my bag over my shoulder, I leave the room only to find Matt in the hallway.

“You’re looking better. How do you feel?”

“Better. Thank you for letting me stay,” I tell him politely.

“As if Rylan would have it any other way,” he smiles.

“I know this could cause trouble for Rylan. I don’t want that.”

“I know you don’t. And everything is going to be fine. I have it handled. I know you don’t want to talk about what happened, least of all with me, but I’m asking you to talk to Rylan. Tell him what happened.”

“I can’t do that.”

“You can. We’re running a DNA test as well.”

“What?” I blurt out. “Why?”

“Someone hurt you, Tamsyn. We take that very seriously as Kings. Especially if it was another King who touched something he wasn’t supposed to touch.” My eyes widen before I school my features. I hope to God they kill Brady for what he did to me, but I also don’t want to hurt Rylan. I keep my head held high as I stare at Matt, not willing to say a word. Would they believe me if he lied to them? What if he said I wanted it? Would they still believe me? I can’t be so sure.

“I …”

“No need to talk now. I understand it was all very traumatic for you. I just want you to know what’s happening. You won’t be left in the dark about this,” he informs me. I nod my head.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Rylan is waiting for you,” he says, nodding toward the stairs. I nod and walk past him, heading down the stairs and out to the car where Rylan waits. I climb in and get settled, but he doesn’t say a word to me. Is he mad at me?

With a sigh, I sit back in the seat as we drive to school. Once we arrive, Rylan climbs out and walks away without looking at me. Something inside of me breaks a little. He’s mad. I get it; I do. He thinks maybe I did something with someone else, and that hurts.

Ignoring the pain in my chest, I slide out of the car and walk toward my class. Angel meets up with me and I pull her into a hug.

“Thank you for everything, Angel.”

“We’re friends, Tamsyn. It’s what we do. I can tell you that I’ve never seen Rylan look so fucking mad in my life.”

“What do you mean?”

“The anger in his eyes scared the shit out of me. You know the saying if looks could kill? That’s exactly what he looked like.”

“Not today, he doesn’t. He’s acting like he doesn’t even want me around.”

“That couldn’t be farther from the truth,” she says as she links our arms together and leads us toward class.

I kind of zone out during class, thinking about the things Ry said to me when he thought I was asleep. He didn’t seem angry then. He seemed almost caring. He kept telling me I would get better and come out stronger, and there was no fucking man on this planet who could hold me down aside from him. I can remember just how serious he sounded, and it caused a chill to run down my spine. I shiver and shift in my seat when I turn my head to see him sitting in the back of the room. He isn’t looking at the professor. He isn’t even in this class, but his dark eyes are trained on me.

We stare at each other for a long minute before he nods toward the professor as if telling me to pay attention. I slowly turn back around and focus on the class but I can’t help but look back. When I do this time, he’s gone. I scan the room, but I don’t see him anywhere. I’m a little too happy when I realize class is over.

Angel and I leave through the door and out into the sunshine.

“You want to do something?”

“Like what? We have class.”

“I know, but let’s skip it. You know the Halloween party is coming up.”

“I heard it was at the elusive Chaos.”

“Yeah, that’s what I was told too. You want to go shopping?” her eyes light up.
