Ry walks over, plucks the rag from my mouth, and holds up the screwdriver.

“You want me to use this on her?”

“Leave her alone. She doesn’t know anything,” I tell him.

“But you do. And you don’t want to tell me.”

“I can’t!”

“You can! And you’re going to Syn, or I’m going to have so much fun carving up your little friend,” he warns me, his teeth gritted so hard I think he may break his jaw.

“You can’t do that to her. She doesn’t deserve it.”

“But you do. You’ve been keeping secrets from me, Syn. Haven’t you?” My insides tremble. “Why was he looking for you?”

“I … I don’t know. He’s crazy!”

“Hmm. He did call out just for you now, didn’t he?”

“Please, Rylan.”

“Tell me what I want to know, or I will play with Angel until you do.” I shake my head as I sob.

“Please, don’t hurt her. She doesn’t know anything.”

“Then tell me what I want to know! The night in the shower, what happened to you?” he demands. I can’t do this. I won’t let him kill Brady without the Kings knowing about it. He’ll be killed, and I can’t let that happen to him. So I clamp my mouth shut and say nothing at all.

Chapter 23

Rylan

It’s not that I want to hurt her, but I need answers only Syn can give me. Angel probably doesn’t know anything, but we’re going to find out shortly how true that is.

Levi ties Angel to the chair as she stares wide-eyed at where Syn is hanging from the wall. Neither of them speaks. I turn toward Angel with my knife in my hand and press it to her cheek. She cries and sobs shake her whole body. I don’t care. I want answers.

“Why was Brady after her?” I ask calmly. She shakes her head as I press the tip into her flesh. “Use your words now, Angel.”

“I don’t know, Rylan. He came in and was screaming for her. He started shooting, and the guy at the table flipped it to hide us. Th-then he held it up so she could run,” she answers in a rush.

“And then what?”

“Then Brady took off out the door after her, and I called Levi to see what I should do.”

“The night at her house, when you found her in the shower. What happened to her?”

“Leave her alone! She doesn’t know, Rylan!” Syn screams at me.

“I-I don’t know. She wouldn’t speak. She didn’t even move.” I’m about to press the knife further into her cheek when I hear my dad.

“Enough! Lower that knife!” he roars. I step back, pulling the knife from Angel’s face, and let it hang in my hand by my side. “What the hell are you doing, Rylan?”

“I’m getting answers.”

“About what?”

“I want to know, for starters, why Brady was after Syn today.” I see something in my dad’s eyes as he looks at her and back to me.

“The Kings is investigating that.”
