“I knew she had it in her I just didn’t know she’d go through with it.”

“Why do you sound pissed?” he asks.

“She killed someone, Silas. With her bare fucking hands,” I snap at him. “She isn’t a killer.”

“She is now,” he mumbles. “Would you have preferred she marry Jack of all fucking people? He was the last one standing,” he reminds me. I fucking hate Jack. I would have had to kill him and leave her a widow if that had happened.

“Hell no.”

“Exactly. This might be a good thing,” he says when he motions to the table. The girls are smiling and laughing, but I’m not sure how the hell Syn is managing it after what she did.

I keep my eye on them as they head for the dancefloor and start to dance. The music is pumping through the speakers, and people are everywhere, but all I can see is her. My little Syn.

I let her have her fun for about an hour and then I’m over it. I head out on the dancefloor to grab her, and she spins to face me. Her eyes light up when she sees its me.

“What the fuck are you so happy about?” I ask her as her lips curl into a smile.

“I love you, Rylan.” Her words rip me apart inside because of what she had to do to love me. She waits. She waits for me to say it back, and when I don’t, her smile fades. I lean down and press my lips to hers instead, and she lets me. And I kiss her hard as fuck. I demand entrance into her mouth, swirling her tongue with my own. She moans and that’s about all I can handle. I pull back, resting my forehead against hers.

“I love you, Syn.” Her smile comes back, and it brightens the whole goddamn room. I grab her hand and tug her along with me out ofChaos and out to the car. I open her door and usher her inside before climbing in myself.

“Why are we leaving?”

“You need to rest. You’re going to hurt like hell tomorrow.”

“You think I can’t handle a little pain?” she snaps at me. I glance over at her as I pull out onto the road.

“I know you can handle the pain, Syn. It’s the mental pain I’m worried about.”

“What the fuck does that mean?”

“It means, right now, you’re fucking drunk and don’t care, but you just killed someone tonight with your bare fucking hands!” She jerks in her seat before shifting and scooting closer to the door. She turns her head and watches out the window, not saying a word to me.

We get to the house and I climb out as she does the same. The wind picks up, a storm is moving in. I head for the door, but she doesn’t. She stands there, staring off in the other direction. Then it starts to rain. I unlock the front door, but she hasn’t moved.

With a sigh, I walk back to her and grab her hand, but she jerks it away from me.

“What are you doing?” I ask her. “It’s fucking raining.” She turns now to face me and I can see the look in her eyes. She doesn’t care.

“Do you know when I first thought I loved you?” she asks me. I shake my head, watching the rain as it runs down her face along with the dirt and blood from the fight. “You were ten, and I was seven. Levi pushed me down, and I skinned my knee. You tackled him to the ground and beat his ass,” she laughs. “You told him if he ever laid a finger on me again, it would be the last thing he did. No one ever stood up for me, but you did. That’s when I knew I loved you, Rylan.” My heart splinters inside me. I didn’t think she even remembered that day.

“I didn’t want you to have to kill anyone, Syn. In fact, I was going to kill her myself and then Jack.”

“You couldn’t do that. They would kill you,” she reminds me.

“How would they know it was me?” Her lips part, and the rain slowly drips over them.

“He … he raped me. He forced me to do things just because he could. He never wanted my mom; he wanted me.” Her words come out low and soft, but I still hear them.

“And the day at school? What made him snap?”

“Your dad called me into his office. He said the rape kit came back, and it was Brady’s DNA. He wanted more evidence against him, so he asked me to help him.”

“Help him do what?” I can feel the rage rattling in my chest. It’s begging to be set free, but I keep it under control for her.

“He set up cameras in my room, sent my mom away, and then we waited. He showed up just like everyone knew he would. He tried … he was going to …” She shakes her head. “He was going to rape me again, but your dad and the Kings came in and stopped it.”

“Your arm and wrist?”
