Once he’s got his pants pulled back up, he crouches down in front of me, his hot breath on my face. He drags his thumb across my lower lip. “Not even close. You said you owed me one last year, and as long as you’re living in my house, I’ll be collecting.”

I swallow hard. “It doesn’t have to be this way. We can find a way so this year is not so awful, Rome.”

He chuckles, and the relaxed man I witnessed just a moment ago is gone as his eyes darken on me. “Don’t you get it, Freckles? Have you not heard a damn word I’ve said? You destroyed my fucking life.”

“I didn’t mean for you to get in trouble.” I try not to raise my voice but sometimes talking to Rome is like speaking to a child who refuses to listen. “I swear! If you’ll just tell me what happened, maybe?—”

He fists my hair and yanks my head back as he crowds me. “I’ll tell you everything, Freckles. I saved you. You ruined me. The end. But if you keep this up and do exactly what I say, maybe I won’t ruin your life in return.”

With that, he lets go of me, gets to his feet, and walks out the bathroom door. I’m left on my knees with his cum stained on my tongue and a pit of regret hollowing out my stomach.

CHAPTER 13

ELODIE

After a few minutes of wallowing in self-pity, I force myself up and head downstairs. I’m grateful to see Julia almost immediately. Though, I’m not exactly thrilled to see she’s chatting it up with Abby. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, considering they attend school together. Just because I’m new doesn’t mean everyone else is.There’s a sense of loneliness that comes with being thrust into a class of people who grew up together. By the way Brogan has garnered a crowd around her, I don’t think she feels that same loneliness as me.

“Hey, girls,” I say when I reach Julia and Abby.

Julia looks at me, and I can immediately tell she’s not excited to be standing here with Abby. It’s reaffirmed when she mouths the words, “Help me.”

I chuckle a little and I’m about to say something to her along the lines of, Can I talk to you for a sec? when Abby inserts herself between us. She throws an arm around Julia, who is a whole half foot shorter than her. Abby seems a little too happy I’ve interrupted their conversation.

“I’m so glad you’re here, Elodie. We were just talking about you.”

I grin at Julia in anticipation. “Is that so?”

Any conversation with Abby about me has to be interesting. I can already tell Abby doesn’t like me. I don’t know her at all, but I don’t like the vibe I get in her presence.

Julia rolls her eyes and I can tell she’s bored and ready to get the hell out of here.

But Abby, not so much. It almost feels like a trap. As if she was using Julia for information, or to bait me. I refuse to think too much into it because I don’t care what Abby, or anyone else, thinks about me.

“We were wondering where you’ve been all this time. Then we saw you walk down the stairs. I mean, you don’t even know anyone here. So…” Abby smacks her glossy lips. “Who were you with?”

“You’re right. I was upstairs. I had a headache, so I found a bed to lie down in.” It’s a lie, but there’s no way in hell I’m telling her, or anyone else, the truth—that I just had my stepbrother’s big fat dick in my mouth.

Now that I think about it, it’s a little exciting having this secret and knowing that Abby has no idea what happened between Rome and me today—twice.

“Alone?” Abby asks, pressing for details.

“Like you said, I don’t know anyone here, so is there a reason to think I was with someone, Abby?” My tone drips with sarcasm and if she doesn’t pick up on it then that’s her problem.

“Good point.” Her tone shifts rapidly, giving me whiplash. “Let me grab us all a drink so we can cheers to Elodie’s arrival in Willow Creek.” She moves a finger between Julia and me. “Don’t go anywhere.”

The second Abby slips away, I grab Julia’s arm. “Run?”

She laughs. “I thought you’d never ask.”

It’s just my luck that the second we turn around, I walk smack-dab into Luke Aarons. “In a hurry?” he asks in his sexy masculine voice.

Why do all the good-looking guys have to be jerks? It’s not fair.

“Actually, yes,” I say.

But at the same time, Julia says, “No.”

My expression morphs into puzzlement. “Julia,” I grit out while nodding my head to the left. “Let’s go.”
