Ignoring Rome, I say, “Gage, do you have extra gloves?”

His eyes move nervously from Rome to me as he reaches into his pants pocket. “Sure. Why?”

I snatch them from his hand, smirking at Rome. “So I can help you.” I slide on the glove and begin pulling a big wad of pink gum off the door, but before I can drop it on the bag, I’m jerked by my arm, away from my locker.

Rome sneers. “What the fuck are you doing?”

“What does it look like I’m doing?” I hold up my gloved index finger, showing him the gum stuck to it.

“Are you trying to be cute right now? Because you’re not.” I don’t understand this guy. One minute he is taunting me and making half the school put chewed gum in my locker, then the next he’s making someone who touched me without my consent clean it up for me. Now he’s angry because I’m cleaning up a mess he made?

“Cute?” I laugh. “I’d hardly call pulling chewed-up gum from my locker cute.”

He growls, and for some damn reason, that does things to me. “I don’t mean the gum. I’m talking about you and Gage.” Possessiveness flares in his eyes and I would smirk if it wouldn’t lead to Rome actually flipping his lid.

I see now, Rome. You want me to have to rely only on you. Well, that’s not gonna happen.

“What about me and Gage?” I may or may not be taunting him right now.

“Why are you being nice to him? The guy crept his fingers up your leg and if you hadn’t stopped him, he probably would have stuck those fingers right inside you while you danced like a cheap stripper.”

My eyebrows nearly hit my forehead. “Cheap stripper?”

“I said what I said.” He lifts his brows in a challenge.

“Ya know.” I shake my head. “For a minute I thought things took a turn in the right direction for us. But the minute you open your mouth to speak, I remember that you’ll always be a complete jackass!” I move my hand toward him then stick the pink wad of gum right on his shirt before spinning around and walking confidently back to my locker.

“You can leave this, Gage.” I pull the glove off my hand and drop it in the plastic bag he’s holding. “I should get to class. But I’ll see you tonight.”

Rome’s heavy footsteps thud behind me, but I pretend he’s not there as he shouts my name.

“Elodie!”

Gage gulps, his eyes on Rome who’s approaching us.

“Yeah,” he says quietly. “I’ll pick you up around seven.”

For added emphasis, I press a chaste kiss to Gage’s cheek just to piss Rome off. “Can’t wait.”

Rome’s jaw clenches, his fists tight at his sides. “Don’t you dare walk away from me when I’m talking to you.”

With my head held high, wearing the biggest damn smile I can, I step up to him. “The last time you said that, I pushed you in a pool. Do you really want to do this again?”

He leans in, his mouth so close to my ear, I can hear the grinding of his teeth. “Have you forgotten what I can do to you?”

I’m well aware that Rome can destroy my reputation with the tap of a button. He can even turn everyone against me by telling them I potentially ruined the season for the Misfits by calling the cops and getting their star quarterback arrested. The thing is, I’m so worked up right now, I don’t even care.

“Do what you have to do, Rome. While you’re stuck in the past, I’m going to live my life.”

I go to step around him, but he throws an arm out to stop me. “What part of I own you don’t you understand?”

I smirk at him, batting my eyelashes like the innocent girl he thinks I pretend to be. “Most people don’t want to break what’s theirs, Rome. So if you own me, then I suggest you treat me a little better before someone else does.” I glance back at Gage. I wouldn’t mind if he made me forget my life for a little while.

For once, Rome doesn’t have anything to say, so I use this opportunity to yank out of his hold and get to class before he thinks of another way to punish me. And I have no doubt that will happen sooner or later.
