“Why would they when you seem so keen on becoming one yourself?” I challenge. She opens her mouth to tell me off, but I continue. “I’ve been hired by Dr. Charles Barrett’s family. If this woman is responsible for Austin’s death, as you presume, she could be connected to Dr. Barrett’s disappearance as well.”

April glances around us for prying eyes or eavesdropping ears before she steps closer and lowers her voice. “Her name is Briar Shea. She works at the Auburn Institute of Fine Arts, and she claims she didn’t know Austin before that night. Yet he meets her and conveniently shows up dead the next morning?” Her lips form a thin line. “And somehow the police still haven’t made an arrest.”

“As a law student, you should know there’s insufficient evidence.”

She tilts her head. “You know I’m a law student. I thought you were investigating Briar Shea, not me.”

“I learn everything I can about all parties involved. When there are no clear answers, everyone is a suspect.”

“Oh, so I killed my brother now?” She rolls her eyes and retreats.

“Not that I can tell. Though I am wondering how you managed to track down Briar’s address. You’re the law student—is that legal?”

“You claim to be a PI. Shouldn’t you know?” She shrugs. “I’ll do what I need to do to get justice for my brother.”

“Someone on the inside gave you the information.” I close the distance between us, towering over her now. “Who was it?”

Fear colors her features before she turns on her heel, striding down the sidewalk. “We’re done here.”

I fall into step beside her. I’m this close to uncovering the information I need to keep my muse safe. I won’t let April leave until she reveals it. “Who’s the officer you had to blow for information?”

Her eyes flash before they narrow. I was bluffing, but it worked. “Forget it,” she snaps.

“Do you really want an officer on the force who bribes women into sex for confidential information?” I grab her arm, pulling her to a stop. “You really think Austin would want that?”

April hesitates, gaze falling to the ground as tears glisten at the memory of her brother. Little does she know, her hero big brother probably sold women to that same corrupt cop.

But I’ll allow her to keep that untainted memory of her brother if she gives me the information I need.

“He said his name is Trevor.”

When I cross the threshold into Briar’s bedroom, she’s already stretched out across her bed in red lingerie, waiting for me.

My god, she’s heavenly. The bra prominently displays her breasts, pushing them up for my enjoyment, a large bow between them with tail ends that extend down to her navel like she’s a present begging to be unwrapped. Her lace thong is little more than a V, the sheer fabric hardly accomplished in hiding her pussy from me.

If I wrote a thousand autobiographies with a thousand different predictions of how my life would turn out, I never could’ve written a twist where I get this lucky.

I grin. “You knew I was coming here. Are you stalking me, sinner?”

“I like when you call me sinner.” Briar beams. “And I wanted to surprise you.”

“Surprise me as often as you like.”

Briar crawls across the mattress to me and my cock twitches, but I need her to know what I’ve discovered.

“April isn’t your stalker.”

Her blue eyes harden. “I don’t want to talk about any of that right now.”

“We need to,” I tell her. “She?—”

“Stop, Saint. None of that matters right now. Nothing else exists when we’re like this, remember? When it’s just the two of us. All of that can wait.”

I can’t argue with her. When she’s in front of me, the rest of the world grows quiet. Everything I’ve learned about April and Trevor can wait.

Tomorrow, I’ll verify April’s story that Trevor was impersonating a police officer and feeding her Briar’s information.

My muse kneels at the edge of the bed and takes my hands in hers. Eyes softening and imploring. “You would never hurt me. Right?”
