The biggest mistake I’ve ever made.

Saint has admitted to murdering men. Why would he have lied about infidelity?

My heart pounds. He loves me. He never did anything to hurt me. But he still handed me the knife when I wanted to kill him.

He would’ve made that sacrifice. For me.

All I want to do now is run to him and fall to my knees begging for forgiveness.

“How did you know I thought it was Saint in the video?” I ask April around the lump in my throat. “How did you even know Trevor sent this to me?”

“He showed up at my house yesterday.” She clutches her arms across her middle. “I nearly threw up seeing him there. When we met, he told me he was a cop and offered to give me your address if I fucked him. He took the video to blackmail me so I wouldn’t say anything to anybody. When he showed up at my place, he said you rejected him, even after the video convinced you it was Saint.” She bites her lip. “Then he told me he’s going to take care of your little boyfriend.”

“Oh my god,” Mack whispers again.

“Fuck.” I rake my hands through my hair. Trevor could be going after Saint right now.

I scramble for my phone, hands shaking as I find Saint’s number.

The phone rings. And rings. “Shit!”

Shit, shit, shit. What if Trevor has already found him?

Mack is so pale, April’s eyes widen. “Is she going to faint?”

I grab my best friend’s shoulders. “Mack, listen. Everything’s going to be okay. But I need to go to Nicholson Manor. I know Saint will be there. I need to warn him.”

I need to tell him that I’m still in love with him. That I’ve never stopped, even when I longed to hate him.

Mack’s pale blue eyes are round when she murmurs, almost imperceptibly, “How do you know James?”

April’s brows draw together. “Who’s James?”

“Her ex,” I explain, more confused now than ever. “What do you mean, Mack? I’ve never met James.”

She jabs at April’s phone, hand trembling. “That was James in the video.”

“You mean Trevor?” April asks.

“He’s the security guard on campus.” My heart pounds against my ribcage in the ensuing silence.

Mack fights back tears. “That’s James. Trevor James Hobart. When I knew him, he went by James.”

My head swims, trying to process her words. What this means.

Trevor is the ex Mack fled California to escape. The ex-cop she couldn’t report to the authorities because they refused to take action against one of their own. The ex who abused and terrified her so badly, she decided it was safest to disappear.

The ex who stalked her. Who tried to kill her.

James.

Trevor James Hobart.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

SAINT

I’m certain Briar told me about her plan to be at Nicholson Manor a day early so I’d meet her there. Deep down, she wants to be together, even if she’s still in denial. Even if she’s terrified of risking her heart.
