The ring inside glints and steals my breath.

“During our writing retreat, when I left you here alone, I bought this.” He swallows around the lump in his throat. “I knew even then I would someday kneel before you to ask the most important question of my life.”

Tears are already pouring down my cheeks, heart in my throat. All this time, he’s had my engagement ring. He bought it back when I was still in the early days of falling in love with him. Back when I was still so sure I would never get married, let alone marry my stalker. Back when I was sure I’d never take a man’s last name. Never let him make me his.

But Saint had already fallen for me. He was so sure that we’d spend the rest of our lives together. That, in time, I would say yes. I would want to become Briar de Haas. I would want to be his. Forever.

“Muse.” Saint’s hand reaches for mine, squeezing with heartbreaking tenderness. I’ve never loved him more. “Will you marry me?”

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

SAINT

Four people are in attendance at our wedding. Briar’s parents sit in the white chairs in our backyard, on opposite sides of the makeshift aisle lined with black rose petals. To my surprise, Warren accepted Briar’s offer to attend our wedding. He did one thing right by her, at least. Even if he’s not happy about his daughter marrying me, he knows he can’t stop her.

April Emmons perches beside Cecilia. She and Briar have developed a friendship and even a working relationship when my muse needs legal advice regarding publishing contracts. In the only other chair in the yard, the groundskeeper sits with a giant smile on his face. I could’ve done without inviting him, but Briar insisted.

The grandparents who took the unearned credit for raising me have long since been buried, but I’m certain that somewhere, my mother watches over us with a smile.

Mack bustles from Nicholson Manor in a deep purple gown that reaches the grass. I rush from the altar to meet her, Zayden at my heels.

“What’s wrong?” I bark.

Briar must’ve developed cold feet. We made it to this day, but she can’t bring herself to walk down the aisle.

“Nothing, she’s ready.” Mack’s blue eyes light up when they land on my best man at my side. “God, you look so sexy in a suit.”

“You look gorgeous in anything.” Zayden grins at her.

Mack beams before throwing her arms around him and pulling him down for a kiss. “I have to go so my best friend can marry the love of her life, but after the wedding, you’re dancing with me.”

He groans as she turns on her heel and races back to the manor. “I don’t dance.”

“You do with me!” she calls.

I chuckle as we return to our positions at the altar, a white wedding arch adorned with black and red flowers above my head. “You owe me.”

Zayden lifts a brow. “For?”

“For introducing you to your future wife.”

“Relax. We haven’t even discussed marriage.” But I recognize that glint in his eyes. The same I saw reflected back in the mirror after I met Briar. When you know you’ve met your soulmate.

“Do me a favor? Keep your bedroom affairs out of your next novel. I don’t need to read that.”

“After you subjected me to the fanfiction about you and your bride? Not a chance.”

I wink at him. “Not fanfiction. Completely true. Every detail.”

Zayden groans until the violinist starts playing a sweet, dulcet tune, and my heart stops.

Mack slowly marches from Nicholson Manor down the aisle. My bride behind her.

I was right—she’s even more beautiful in her wedding dress.

Briar beams at me with every step, the veil already tossed back to reveal her gorgeous face. Her blue eyes bright, her skin radiant, her smile wider than I’ve ever seen.

My eyes mist.
