“His parents need to leave him the fuck alone,” I growled, hating that they did that to their own son. “But if it's ok with you, I’d like to come too.”

“Agreed,” she huffed. “But are you serious!?”

“Yeah, if you say they are ok, then yes,” I said. “I also think it would be good for Easton to have a Thanksgiving with us. It makes me mad thinking he’s had to spend holidays alone because of his parents.”

“It breaks my heart too. Are you hungry? I have some leftover chicken tortilla soup; I was just going to reheat it.”

My mouth watered instantly.

“That sounds delicious, but I can get it if you need to keep baking,” I said, getting up.

“Nonsense, I’ll just heat it in a pot. I’m sure Easton is hungry too,” she said smiling at me, before she went to the fridge to take out a big bowl.

“Do you know how to cook for just two people?” I laughed.

Noemi always cooked like she was feeding ten people.

“Shut up.” She laughed with me. “I’m used to cooking for a lot of people and you’ve benefited a lot from it, so be quiet.”

It had been a while since I had had a home-cooked meal this often, especially one that tasted as good as my mother’s cooking. No one had taken care of me in years without wanting something in return or expecting something. It never felt like a tally was being kept with Noemi and I loved it. I just hoped I didn’t get too used to it before we all decided to move on.

The GPS brought us to a beautiful two-story home that looked relatively new. It was drizzling when we arrived making me worry the roads going back home might get bad. Noemi was restless the entire drive. Her excitement was palpable the whole way here and as soon as I put the car in park, she bolted out of the car with a few bags.

Easton laughed, but I could tell he was a little nervous.

“Come on, let's get the awkwardness over with.” I squeezed his hand, exiting the car and grabbing the rest of the desserts she had brought.

Just as we walked to the door, it opened with an extremely happy Noemi.

“Sorry, guys.” She stood to the side letting us come in.

I expected to see her sisters right away, but Noemi led us down a hall into an open concept room. The TV had a football game on, and a few children were on the floor playing a game. The smell of turkey permeated the air, making the entire atmosphere feel even more homey.

“You’re even more good-looking in person.” A woman who looked eerily similar to Noemi walked up to us with a dish towel thrown over her shoulder. “Hi, I’m Rosa, Noemi’s oldest sister.”

“Hello, I’m Easton,” he said, holding out his hand.

“We hug in this house, is that ok?” She looked between us.

“Sure,” we said together.

She hugged Easton immediately, the way his back stiffened, made me worry that this might be too much for him. Rosa let go of him, hugging me immediately.

“Hello, I’m Vincent,” I said, when she pulled away.

She smiled at me, and I felt like an idiot for coming. Her sisters probably thought I was too old for her.

“Alright, hand me your coats and you can go meet the rest of the family,” she said, holding out her hands, taking our jackets.

“Fuck, Noemi, how the hell did you find these two?” Another woman came into the kitchen. “Did you take out a lonely woman ad?”

She was completely different from Noemi with light brown hair and hazel eyes.

“Fuck you.” Noemi pushed her away.

“I could possibly be straight for a few hours for them,” she said, looking us up and down. “Hi, I’m Samantha.”

She hugged us quickly while we each said our names. Then Noemi introduced us to her sister-in-law Sadie and brother-in-law Juan. Then she introduced us to the kids who looked impatient to get back to the game.
