“Why did you put that shite for brains in charge of the poker games?” Loch groused as we climbed into the car.

He looked dishevelled, probably from fucking his new wife. Lucky bastard. I licked my lips, but sadly, there was no hint left of Amy’s musk.

“Didn’t you eat?” Loch said, staring at me.

“Oh, I ate. Let’s sort this shite out.”

On the short drive to the warehouse where Cian was, I contemplated the situation with Amy. The only reason I’d resisted the urge to kidnap her was that I refused to become like my old man. He snatched my mother off the streets and made her his. My mother, God love her, cared for the bastard even though she didn’t know half of the evil he was capable of, at least not until too late. The same obsessive beast lived inside of me, and I needed to know I had it under control. It reared so quickly to the surface when I saw Amy near another man. Ian’s lucky that I like him and know he’d never touch my woman. But I can’t say the same for everyone else.

My phone rang, and I pulled it out. An unknown number flashed up. Since my phone wasn’t subject to telesales, I answered it, intrigued.

“What?”

“Mr O’Sullivan, may I trouble you for a minute of your time?” A cultured voice filled the line.

“Who is this? How did you get my number?” I asked, and Loch glanced over from the driver’s seat.

“I’m merely a concerned friend.”

I let the silence stretch until he cleared his throat awkwardly.

“It’s come to my attention that you have been visiting a residence on Carlisle Road.”

Grinding my teeth, I sat up straighter.

“I suggest you choose your next words carefully, friend.”

He cleared his throat again. This guy had bigger balls before he dialled my number.

“A friend of mine lives there… and she’s vulnerable. I’m looking out for her.”

“Lots of friends you have. Tell me, what is the name of your other friend?”

“Catherine.”

It clicked into place with the background check I made on the housemate. I knew exactly who this eejit was, and my rage cooled.

“Do you know who you are calling?”

“Yes.”

“Well then, friend. If you know who I am, what did you hope to achieve by informing me that you’re monitoring my whereabouts?”

His swallow was audible. “I need your help. We aren’t the only people observing that residence. I am a man of considerable resources, but…”

“But you operate inside of the law.” I finished for him.

“Most of the time.” A slight growl entered his voice.

“What are you offering? I don’t do favours out of the goodness of my heart.”

“Your interest is solely in Amy Shelton?”

“Spit out what you want. Time is money.”

“Get rid of the men staking out their building. I assume you’ll be moving Miss Shelton out soon?”

“Assumptions will get a man killed.”
