“Really?”

I wasn’t even going to examine how high-handed he had been packing up all my stuff, but I was grateful. I had digital copies of my pictures, but I was still glad.

“What about Cat’s stuff?”

“I don’t know. I’ve not had time to speak to Craig. You realise she could replace her things in a heartbeat? Her family is old money.”

“She was cut off. She moved away to avoid them controlling her.”

“She still has powerful friends.”

“Sienna is rich, I guess,” I mused.

We fell into silence, and the enormity of what he told me settled over me. I had no home now.

“Is Craig going to be okay? I’ll have to thank him.”

Sean frowned.

“He’s not the only one that got shot.” He pouted.

My finger flew to the edge of his bandage, remembering the gunshot wound from last night.

“Who shot you?”

“Niko.”

I gaped at him. “What?”

“Lucky shot,” he grunted.

There was a knock at the door.

“Come in,” Sean shouted, and Trixie entered with a food tray.

“I made you pancakes,” she said, setting the tray on the bed. “Have you taken your medication?”

“Don’t fuss, Trixie.” Sean sighed.

I noticed he spoke to her differently, more like how he talked to me.

“What do you expect? Getting yourself shot!” Trixie reddened. “Just keep an eye on him,” she told me before bustling out again.

Next, Loch entered with a large gift-wrapped box and an envelope.

“I’ll leave these here.” He gave Sean a meaningful look and dropped the parcel on the bottom of the bed.

“Thank you. I’ll be in my office shortly,” Sean said, and Loch left, closing the door.

“You can’t get up today. You were shot,” I said.

“My organisation won’t run itself. I can’t have my men thinking I’m weak.” Sean pointed at the envelopes. “Grab those.”

“What is in here?” I picked up a large white envelope and a smaller red one.

“A birthday card. It’s late now, but still.”

I stilled, but then I remembered he had used my real name, so he must have known my actual date of birth.
