Page 64 of Hiding Desire

I drank the sweet hot chocolate and contemplated my own morality. Maybe I wasn’t such a good person after all. Eventually, I got out of Sean’s bed and went to find him.

Out in the corridor, a ginger-haired man lingered by the door of what I assumed was Sean’s office.

“No wonder he wouldn’t let me go to the strip clubs. It looks like he wanted to keep the top pick for himself.” The guy walked toward me, his gaze appraising.

It reminded me of some of the club’s more lecherous patrons – those who undressed you with their eyes regardless of what you wore. He drew level, stopping far too close. There was a large bruise on his temple and a cut across his cheek. I didn’t lean away like I wanted to. Showing fear to a man like this would be like a red rag to a bull.

“I’m Cian. Sean’s cousin. We’re very close.” He smirked at me. “What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?”

“What the fuck are you doing?”

We both jumped at Loch’s shout as he barrelled up the corridor.

“Step back, shite for brains.” Loch slammed Cian against the wall in an arm bar. The smaller man struggled and spluttered.

“What’s going on?” Sean appeared in the doorway with a gun in his hand.

Loch released Cian, who slid down the wall.

“The big bastard is attacking me for no reason,” Cian whined, massaging his throat.

“You gonna tell Sean how fecking close you were to his woman?”

Sean’s face darkened. “Care to explain?”

“I was just saying hello and being friendly like. She’s a new family member. I came to see you. After-after?—”

“After your incompetence nearly got Sean killed?” Loch said, aggressively jutting his chin towards Cian.

Cian stumbled back from Loch and fell on his butt.

“As you can see, I’m fighting fit.” Sean held his gun arm out.

There was no weakness in his stance. The lump on his temple had gone down, and he’d ditched the sling.

“That’s good.” Cian scrambled to his feet and backed away. “I’m going to check on security for next week’s game.”

Sean nodded, and then he and Loch exchanged glances after Cian disappeared around the corner.

“Has Dr Ali finished the infusion?” Loch asked, and Sean nodded. “Okay, I’ll take Rada and sort out what we discussed.”

Sean nodded. He tucked his gun away, slid an arm around my back, and guided me into his office.

The room was nothing like I imagined. It had an antique charm, with rich dark furnishings and bookshelves filled to the brim. He guided me across the room, but I paused at the shelves. The books were mainly business themed. I guess they didn’t write about gang warfare.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, pulling me onto his lap as he sat back in a big leather swivel chair.

“I should ask you that. How is your shoulder?”

“Healing. The doc’s got me doped up, and he’s given me a bag of black shite. I feel better.”

“Black shite?”

“He said it was iron.” He nuzzled his face into my hair and took a long breath.

I sank against his familiar firm body.

“I’m not sorry,” he said.
