I glanced at the computer, and there was no alert from Thomas. He preferred to communicate electronically despite living in another area of the same house.

“I’ll speak to him.” I fired off a text to Loch and then stared at Cian.

“I can go?—”

“Loch’s handing it.”

Cian clenched his jaw and nodded, leaving the room.

“He’s your cousin?”

“Yep, my pa had two brothers.”

“Was his dad the one Ivan killed?”

I’d told her briefly of our previous issues with the Stefanovs.

“No. That was our other uncle.” I ran a hand through my hair. “It was an initial product exchange. We were supposed to be building an alliance with the Bulgarians.”

She winced, looking at me wide-eyed. “You were going to align yourself with them?”

“No, we were working on a mutual supply chain. Viktor, Boyan’s son, is much better educated than the rest of the family. He wanted to focus on the arms and cut the trafficking out. Or so he told me. But that all went to shite after Uncle Declan was killed.”

“Now you are at war with them?” She fiddled with my collar.

“Yes, but you don’t need to worry. I’ll keep you safe.”

“I’m not worried for me. I’m worried for you.”

“Don’t worry, a chuisle. I always win.” I kissed her lips. “I’ve got something to show you.”

She stood, and I had to adjust myself from the painful position my dick was trapped in. She smirked at me. I grabbed her hand and led her towards the library. I hadn’t given her a proper tour of the house and grounds, but she had met all the important people.

“In here.” I opened the door and watched her eyes go comically wide.

“Oh my god!”

I tried to see the library through her eyes, with its rows of shelves, a small mezzanine, a large sofa, and a few tables with reading lamps. The smell of old paper washed over me, and a tense part of me relaxed. I led her to the wooden bar and poured us a drink.

“Those are for you.” I gestured at a stack of thick textbooks.

“Are those?” She rushed over to the table and started thumbing through them. “Oh my god, these are all new. I had a fourth-edition copy of this one.”

She held up a shiny book with a picture of teeth on the front.

“The Dean had the head of the dental school send a list of textbooks. They’ve paused your course. All they know is you had a family emergency. The university received a generous donation and will keep their mouths shut.”

She flung herself at me, and I grunted at the impact, pressing a kiss to her hair.

“I’m as obsessed with you as my pa was with my ma, but I won’t make you give up your dreams,” I told her, making the promise I intended to keep.

I knew my limitations as a jealous, obsessive bastard. She would need permanent guards to attend university even after all the gang war was over. But I wanted her to realise her promise to her mother.

She beamed at me, kissing me. I deepened the kiss like the greedy fucker I was. She pulled away and eagerly examined the pile of books before staring at the stacks, which held a varied collection.

“Thank you. I didn’t…” she trailed off.

“You didn’t pen me for a bookworm?”
