“We have holding cells?” I asked, and Sean just shrugged.

Loch held Rada’s face and whispered something fervently to her. It was intense, and I tore my eyes away.

They said goodbye, and Sean fiercely kissed my lips again before stalking away, leaving an empty coldness in his wake. Rada looked ready to level the place; her fists curled and jaw set, but when she turned, I saw a sheen of tears in her eyes. This sank a heavier stone into my gut. A tense few minutes passed as we stood in silence, listening to Sean bark orders at the men. Then, doors slammed on the vehicles, and they rolled out.

Craig appeared at the end of the corridor, his arm still in a sling. He said nothing, but clearly, he was one of the men left with us. Rada scoffed and turned on her heel, grabbing my arm and towing me away.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“We will not sit around like pretty ladies,” she said, her accent thicker with her anger.

“Okay,” I said, nervous about what she meant by that.

She towed me towards the other end of the house, and I noticed Craig subtly following us. We descended the steps and approached a door I’d only ever walked past. Rada tapped a number on the keypad and opened it. Inside was a sitting room with shelved walls. She pressed a panel which popped open and typed into another keypad, and the shelving swung open.

I gasped at the sight. It looked like an action movie. Machine guns, knives, machetes, smaller guns, knuckledusters, and a variety of sledgehammers adorned the walls and floor.

“Holy shit,” I said.

Rada moved around the selection with practised ease. She collected knife sheaths and began strapping them on. She grabbed a gun and checked the chamber, filling it with bullets.

“Er… What are we doing?”

“You are just standing there, but I’m getting ready. I have a bad feeling. A very bad feeling.”

A shiver passed over the back of my neck. “I’ve never…”

“I know.” She handed me a blade on a strap and then two grenades. “Take these.”

“What the hell!” I put the grenades down like they were hot potatoes.

“Look, if something goes wrong and they come here, we need weapons. These will fit in your bra. No one will know because your boobs are already big.”

I gaped at her and the idea of stuffing my bra with freaking grenades.

“Why would anyone come here?”

I hadn’t liked the idea of Sean leaving, but I knew I was a liability in a fight. Maybe Loch had trained Rada to be a badass, but I knew my skill set: dancing and dentistry. Rada turned away and leaned over as if she was secreting a weapon inside her pants. Struth! I glanced around, waiting for someone to jump out, shouting, “Fooled you.”

Rada turned back and gestured at the grenades again.

“What if I accidentally set one off?”

“To activate them, you must pull the pins out and release the arm. If you put them in your bra, that won’t happen.” She showed me how they worked.

This felt like the time at junior school when Marie Jones forced me to roll my skirt up, even though I knew Mamá and Abuela would go mad. The stakes seemed a lot higher, though, like blowing-a-breast-off higher. I humoured her and stuffed them into my bra. The cold metal dug into my boobs, and although I had a baggy hoodie on, I looked like I’d grown to a double F.

“Follow me.” Rada led me out of the room.

Craig was nowhere to be found. She took me to the lift and pressed the lower-level button inside. The door opened into a blank corridor with various doors off to the side. She scanned her fingerprint, and the door clicked open. In the centre of the room, tied to a chair, was a bloodied man with a swollen face and ginger hair.

“Is that Cian?”

“Yes,” Rada spat.

The man looked up; dry blood marred his face, and his lips formed a manic grin.

“You bitches have a death wish.”
