Page 81 of Hiding Desire

I stumbled along behind her, part of my brain knowing we had been brought to a dangerous place, and the other part dissociated from what was happening.

We peered around the corner of what looked like a factory, with faint machinery noises in the background. The double doors at the end of the corridor had round windows. We crept along to the end and looked through. I froze at the scene. Sean and Loch were bound and huddled on the floor in the middle of the room. Multiple men paced the periphery with guns. Cian looked dreadful, gesturing to another man with similar coloured hair that I didn’t recognise. Footsteps behind us shot panic through my veins.

“Hide,” Rada hissed, pushing me behind a stack of crates by the door.

Frozen, I crouched behind the boxes, but instead of joining me, she whirled around to meet whoever was coming. Shouting in Bulgarian forced my eyes shut, and I shook as memories from that night washed over me. Scuffling and grunting made me curl into a ball.

“How the fuck did she get out?” a male voice said as the door opened.

“Fuck you,” Rada shouted.

“You’ll pay for that, you fucking whore.”

A slap rang out, and an inhuman roar came from inside the room. I recognised it as Loch. The sound was frightening.

“I’m going to enjoy fucking you in front of your husband,” the cruel voice mocked.

“We have business to attend to.” A voice I’d recognise anywhere sent a fresh wave of terror through me.

Boyan Stefanov was a few feet from where I hid.

“Check for Sean’s bitch,” the unfamiliar voice hissed before the door swung shut and footsteps faded away.

I shrank further behind the boxes and tried to make my ragged breathing quiet with my sleeve, trembling with suppressed memories of hiding as they took Mamá’s body away.

Was it my destiny to hide and cower as these people killed the ones I loved? I dug my fingernails into my palms, needing the bite of pain to reign in my hysteria. Breathe. I refused to do this again. Sean, Loch, and Rada weren’t dead. Focus! I pulled the two grenades from my bra. Sean said a threat was sometimes enough. They couldn’t shoot me without having me drop these. Could I threaten to drop them and get them to release Sean and Loch? Hell, who was I kidding?

I silently prayed to Mamá, asking for her strength. Pulling the pins out with my teeth, I curled my fist around the arm thingy. Rada gave it a name, but I was frightened out of my mind and wasn’t sure I could remember my own name.

Leaving the pins on the ground, I took a deep breath and popped up to peer through the door. Maybe I could safely throw one off to the side? Fuck. I didn’t even know the blasting power of these things. This was all kinds of fucked up.

“Freeze,” a voice behind me barked.

I jumped, almost dropping my grenades.

“Turn around slowly.”

I pivoted, keeping my hands slightly away from my body.

“Fuck,” said a guy dressed in black with a gun, his eyes glued to the grenades. “Where are the fucking pins?”

“I swallowed them,” I said, unsure where that brain wave came from.

“Crazy bitch. Step away from there.”

“Actually, I think I’ll go inside. If you shoot me and I drop them, we are both dead.”

“Fuck.”

I backed against the doors and pushed them open with my butt.

“What the hell is this?” the unfamiliar voice greeted me, and I turned away from the gunman, who hesitantly followed me into the room.

My confidence grew seeing the shocked expressions on the faces of the men inside as I lifted my arms. The atmosphere shifted.

“Nobody move,” I shouted, my voice shaky.

“What are you going to do, you dumb bitch?” Cian shifted on his feet next to the unfamiliar man.
