He’d remained in the States. My gut told me he was telling the truth, but with the recent betrayal, my brain didn’t want to believe it. However, his eyes were the exact shade as Ma’s.

“Are you going to shoot me, brother?”

“Jury’s out.”

“On shooting me or the sibling thing?” He cocked his head.

Cheeky bastard.

“Do we have a sister too?”

His face darkened. “No, she died.”

I slumped down in a chair nearby and watched him.

He settled back into his seat. “I thought you’d at least try to shoot me.”

I grunted, not quite ready to give up that idea.

“I know that blood has recently betrayed you, and I’m not here to sit around with a beer and shoot the shit, but I have bought you a present.”

He nudged a box next to his foot.

“You’ve bought me body parts.”

“Your favourite. Boyan is dead. He was involved with the ring that bought and sold me. Unfortunately, for them, they were a little too effective in training killers.” He grinned manically.

“What makes you think I want his head?”

“I knew you’d want proof.”

I nodded. “How did you get in?”

He wagged his finger at me. “I can’t give away all my secrets.”

Fuck’s sake.

“Why now?”

“It was the right time. I needed to work to get Boyan out on a technicality.”

“Why not kill him inside?”

“And miss the light leaving his eyes? Never.”

He sounded like me.

“What do you want?”

“I always thought you would remain like me, a lone wolf, but watching you with your woman has intrigued me with the idea of family.”

I stiffened. “What do you mean watching me?”

“Nothing like that.” He waved away my raised gun.

“You look happier. The concept fascinates me.”

He made me sound like a science project.
