I also don’t like the news of her father and then this break up…

If she were mine — here we fucking go.

If she were mine?

She isn’t mine and I’m about to hire her.

I’m a sick bastard, because while I know she can do the job, I don’t like the idea of her taking a position that isn’t worthy of her.

Still. I may have something more suitable coming up.

I smirk to myself.

I’ve never fucked any of my staff before. It’s a cardinal rule I’ve never broken. So, if I do hire her, there is absolutely no way I’m gonna be able to keep my hands off her.

It’s only a dilemma if she makes it one.

She’s staring at me and I realize I haven’t said anything back. “You look displeased by my answer,” she tells me, jolting me back to the present.

Oh, if only you knew, Krasavitsa. You please me more than I can ever say.

Chapter Ten

Imogen

I wait for his response.

“I’m sorry for your loss,” he says, his tone quiet. “Were you close?”

“Yes.” I nod. “It’s been very difficult.”

I have no idea why I was so honest about that, or why he even needs to know anything about my personal life. I just kind of blurted it out.

“I’ll admit,” he says after a long moment of silence. “I’m surprised that you weren’t working for another brand, that’s what struck me initially. You have a lot of experience.”

I shrug. “Just being honest. I haven’t been in the right mind frame, until recently.” My eyes meet his and I did not mean it to sound like it was because of the other night. I hurry to rectify it. “I mean, not… us. But before that. Way before. I’m good now —I’ve got my mojo back and started applying for new positions — God, this is all sounding so wrong…”

I hold one hand over my face and try to compose myself.

What the hell is wrong with me?

He watches me carefully, never once breaking eye contact. Was he this intense when we first met? He’s so unnerving.

Did he really make me come that many…

“No, it’s not. It’s refreshingly honest. Nobody ever comes into an interview and says what’s really on their mind. It’s all a load of bullshit. Your ex…”

Uh oh.

“Yeah, sorry about that. I have no business bringing him up.”

“It’s over?”

“Yes.”

“Who broke it off?”

My heart races in my chest. “Uh, he did. But then he wanted…”
