I hear the elevator ping and then there’s a knock at the door. I’m sure Khristian has a key; maybe he just knocks for my benefit.

I go to answer and he’s standing there, looking rough and rugged, his jacket slung over one arm and his tie loose around his neck. The top button of his shirt is loose and his hair is slightly disheveled. I itch to run my hand through it, disheveling it some more, but I refrain.

“Hello, Khristian.” I open the door wider.

He smiles. “Hello.” He walks in, his shoes clicking on the marble floors. He whistles low. “It’s prettier than I thought.”

“You haven’t seen it?”

“I only recently acquired it, but I’ve been wanting to get into this building for a while now. Are you happy with everything?”

“Khristian, it’s amazing. But this is… a little… too much.”

He frowns. “Too much? You can’t go on living at Lukas’ place forever. Anyway, It’s part of the package.”

I stare at him. I don’t want to appear ungrateful. I’m not. This is everything a girl could dream of. But I grew up without a lot of money. And I know what it feels like to have everything taken away.

He cups my face. “What’s wrong?”

I shake my head. “It’s beautiful. You’re a very generous man.”

“I hear a but coming on.”

“Do you honestly give all your employees this?”

He looks around, then shrugs like it’s nothing. “It’s just bricks and mortar. And yes, I do. Maybe not as nice as this, but I don’t want you living in an unsafe area.”

“That’s just it,” I say, trying to keep my voice even. “This is where I’m getting a little… confused.”

He tilts my chin up to look at him. “What are you getting confused about?”

Do I tell him my fears? That everything has happened so fast and I feel similar to a spinning top, ready to tumble as soon as he lets go. Or do I just keep that to myself.

I barely know this man, and yet already, he’s winding his way into my heart. A place I never thought I’d let a man venture ever again. Not after my breakup.

He waits patiently for me to elaborate…

Chapter Twenty-Two

Khristian

I can’t tell if she’s happy, sad or downright mad. But I do know I want to make things right.

“You’re upset with me?” I question when she doesn’t answer.

She runs her hands down my chest, resting them on my pecs. “No. I’m not upset at you. This is all…amazing, but it’s a lot.”

“Do you want to talk about it?” I’m not huge on talking, but I want to know everything about my Krasavitsa and what’s making her frown this way.

“You know how I feel — what I said about you coming into town… and…”

“I’m not leaving Seattle,” I state.

She blinks. “What?”

“For the foreseeable future, I will be residing here for the time being. But even then, I heard what you said. We’re not fuck buddies.”

“So it’s just because Tre’sor is having teething problems?”
