She looks up at me and I can’t help but see disappointment there. “I want to get to know you.”
“So do I.”
“I also want to do a good job, not because we’re screwing — and I like that a lot — but because this is a dream job for me. I want to earn it on my own merits. I don’t want you to be lenient on me if I mess up. You have to treat me like you would any other employee… not that I want to be fired.”
“Not yet,” I murmur against her lips. “You might start to believe I really am a tyrant. You might want to quit and give me the finger like what’s-his-face.”
She giggles. “Oh my god. Today was a day I’ll never forget. Remind me never to piss you off.”
I grin. “You can piss me off all you want. What I can’t stand is laziness and excuses. They shouldn’t need a surprise visit from the CEO. I’m glad I listened to my instincts. Fuck knows what the hell would’ve happened if I didn’t jump on that plane.”
“Wasn’t there a project manager, or someone in charge?”
“Marcus,” I grunt. “I fired him before you came on board.”
“Oh,” she laughs.
“So let’s eat, then we can check out that spa in the main bedroom.”
She reaches up onto her tiptoes to kiss me. “Sounds like a great idea.”
Chapter Twenty-Three
Imogen
An hour earlier
“An apartment? Wow,” Ariana says, surprise in her eyes. “That’s freaking amazing. So, Khristian Petrov isn’t the tyrant that I’ve been hearing about in the press?”
Of course it’s just like Ari to do her homework on my new boss. Little does she know there’s so much more to the story.
“No, he’s a tyrant. He fired his entire team today, that’s why I got a promotion.”
At least, I hope that’s why. That feeling rises in me again that I’m screwing the boss and how cliche that is.
“Right place at the right time, it happens. From what Lukas told me, he’s under a lot of pressure from the board, and his father who has quite the reputation.”
“How does Lukas know him again?”
“They run in the same business circles and are friends, and you know Lukas has shares in Endeavors. He speaks highly of him. As long as he’s not a tyrant to you, then he’s got my vote.” She smiles as we sip our tea. “All this is extremely exciting, Imi, but I’ve been dying to know more about this man that’s been keeping you out at night. I want details.”
I tuck the hair behind my ears. “There’s a funny story to that.”
She turns and gives me eyes. “Oh, god, is it really racy? Tell me he’s kinky, please.”
I laugh. “Yes, he is. But that’s not the craziest part.”
She waits in anticipation and I take a deep breath. “The guy that I spent the night with at Endeavors?”
“Yeah?”
“He’s…” I swallow hard. She’s going to freak. “He’s Khristian Petrov.”
Her eyes go wide. “What the fuck?”
“Yeah.” I shrug. “He… um… we did it and it was amazing and he wanted to see me again, and then when I went for my interview, he was there… as the CEO.”
“Back up, back up just a second.” She waves a hand at me. “We paid for an escort, Imi. Why did he show up?”
