Outside, Nikan looked over his shoulder to the store. “She should not work in customer service. Did she even smile?”

Self-conscious, I looked away. I knew why she wasn’t friendly, and it was all about her dislike of me. “It’s pretty late in the afternoon. She’s probably all smiled out.”

“Maybe,” he said quietly. We looked at each other for a long moment. “So…”

“Yeah, I better go,” I told him hurriedly. “Dinner doesn’t cook itself.”

“Nikan!”

We both turned to the gruff voice, and I once more found myself face-to-face with the new alpha. He looked even bigger than before, and I wasn’t sure how that was possible.

“Here we go,” Nikan muttered under his breath. “Alpha?”

Cannon gave him a flat stare before he turned his attention to me. “I see they let you out, pup.”

“I wasn’t in jail,” I snapped at him.

“But you were in trouble,” he taunted me, and that half smile was back on his insufferable-looking face.

“I was cleared,” I grumbled, shifting on my feet uncomfortably.

“What’d you do?” Nikan asked curiously.

“Won a fight,” Cannon spoke for me.

Looking around, I quickly shushed him. “Keep your voice down!”

He said nothing, but I saw his agitation, his eyes narrowing further when I stepped back.

“I need to go,” I spoke to Nikan. “It was nice to meet you. Enjoy your meal.” Turning to Cannon, I looked him up and down. “I…yeah, I got nothing. Bye.”

Quickly, I walked away from them, Cannon’s rumbling laughter burning my ears red. I just disrespected an alpha. I would be in so much trouble if Bale found out. Even more trouble if Kris learned I had spoken to him.

“You run away more than you should.”

My startled yelp caused him to laugh again. Glancing to my left, I looked at him in disbelief. I hadn’t heard him approach me. I hadn’t even been aware he was beside me until he spoke.

How did he do that?

“How did you do that?” I demanded, looking back to where Nikan was still standing.

“I’m a hunter.” Cannon looked down at me, and I felt my mouth go dry at the look in his eyes.

“We’re all hunters,” I retorted sharply. “Doesn’t mean I can go into Batman mode and jump out of the shadows.”

“What the fuck is Batman mode?” he asked me curiously, that stupid smirk back. “And it’s bright sunshine this afternoon. I don’t hide in shadows, pup.”

“With your looks, maybe you should.” Oh my Luna, what was I saying?

Cannon laughed. Loudly. Drawing attention to us. Again.

“Will you stop?” I hissed at him. “Do you want my entire pack to judge me?”

Cannon stopped laughing. Reaching out, he pulled me to a stop. Nervously, I stood in front of him. “What?”

Coolly, he looked me over, taking his time, making me even more uncomfortable for an entirely different reason. “Let them see you, pup,” he told me.

“They see me just fine,” I told him, my gaze flicking back to the pack members who watched us.
