“We gave her the deer. It was fresh.”

“The wolf needs the kill.” He turned to my brother. “If you don’t open the door, I’ll knock it down myself.”

Kris hesitated before elbowing him out of the way. “She doesn’t like you,” he grumbled. “The other cell is open. I suggest you stand in it to avoid her claws.”

“What about you?” He cocked his head to the side in question. “You put her in here. I don’t think she’s a fan of you either.”

“But I’m the one letting her out,” Kris snapped.

“You’re going to run with her?” Cannon said in understanding. “I thought your duty was here.”

“My duty is my sister.” Kris pulled off his T-shirt, tossed it behind him, and shoved his jeans down. Standing in his boxers, he crouched to meet my wolf’s eyes. “You bite me, we’re going to have a problem.” She growled. “You try to outrun me? Remember, I know where you run to, and when I catch you, we’re going to have a problem.” She snapped her jaws. “You run, you hunt, and you let my sister surface. Anything else, and we’re going to have a problem.” She shook her head. “Kezia! I know you hear me. You make her know she stays with me, or she stays inside.”

Please, listen. He’s letting us out. Please. We need to be away from here. From him.

I could feel her frenzy. The wildness wanted freedom. We had too much itching in our skin, but one thing, one feeling, was still overpowering everything else.

The need to run. To hunt.

She dropped her head. I heard the lock turn and then the quick crack of bones. Raising her head, she saw the large brown wolf step back. Eyes bright with anger watched her as she nudged her head against the bars, gently pushing the cell gate open.

His scent caught her attention, and she jerked forward, but the brown wolf banged into her side. With his head lowered into her shoulder, he herded her to the stairs. Stopping at the foot of the stairs, she looked back. He was at the cell door, not in it as he had been told.

Calm. Watching. Unafraid.

The door at the top of the stairs opened, and she smelled fresh air. She wanted to bite him, but she also wanted to run. Cannon gave a curt nod, giving his permission, and she spun from him.

With a howl, she barged past the brown wolf who sought to shield her from the other, ignoring the yells of surprise as she burst through the door at the top of the stairs, and then she was out, the stars bright in the night sky.

Sunlight stabbed at my eyelids, and with my hand raised to shield them from the bright intruding rays, I carefully opened my eyes. Slowly, I lowered my hand as I turned my head from the blue sky and tried to figure out where I was.

Trees were to my right, an open glade to my left, and in front of me was my very naked brother.

“I will never unsee your huge hairy butt,” I complained as I pulled myself up into a sitting position. Every part of me hurt. Even my ears hurt. Why the hell did my ears hurt? “Did I fight a bear?”

Kris snorted, turning his head to look at me over his shoulder. “No. You fought me.”

I fought him? Shit. “Oh.” Looking down at my body, I noticed I still had all my limbs. “Did I win?” I asked in disbelief.

“You knocked your head very hard,” he told me. “Probably have a concussion…explains the kind of thinking you’re experiencing.”

“So you won. Fine.” Rolling my eyes, I looked around again. “Where the heck are we? Is my heat over? I can’t believe you let me out.”

“Slow down, Kez.” Kris chuckled as he sat on the grass. “I had no choice. She was going to get out anyway or hurt you trying.”

“I remember little,” I admitted. “How badly did I fuck up?” I braced myself for the lecture, so when my brother grinned at me widely, I was completely perplexed.

“It’s perfect.”

“Huh?”

“No one followed. We’re far from the pack,” he told me, but his smile disappeared. “We’re far from them.”

“Them? You mean Cannon and his pack?”

“You can run.” He looked pleased about it. “They won’t follow, and if you’re careful, they won’t find you, Kez. Your wolf is so smart. Think about it, Kezia…you can be free.”

I was shaking my head in denial before he even finished speaking. “What? No! Why would I leave you?” I scrambled to my feet, ignoring the fact my body swayed or that I was naked. Wolf shifters didn’t really care about nudity. It was a fact of pack life, but I tended to avoid giving my brother a full frontal, and he paid me the same courtesy.
