Either way, I wasn’t hanging around to ask. Setting off in a slow jog, I made my way to the large warehouse and came to a sudden stop. Pressing closer to the building, I heard them then—voices.

Carefully, I moved around the building, stopping when I heard the voices getting louder, but still, I couldn’t hear what was being said. There was definitely more than one person inside the warehouse, and I wasn’t sure of my chances against more than one attacker.

Biting my lip, I froze as a wave of dizziness swept over me. Breathing slowly, I waited for it to pass, using the wall for support. While I struggled to stay upright, I became aware of the sound of feet on gravel.

I didn’t want to be caught again, so pushing off the wall, I ran back the way I’d come and around the other side, hoping to make it to the front entrance before they knew I was out of the shed.

Edging around the front side, I saw the open gates to the yard. Stealing a glance to the front of the warehouse, I saw a side access door, slightly open, where light and voices spilled out into the night. Looking between the door and the yard, I considered my options.

Don’t do it, Kezia.

One small peek wouldn’t hurt.

Moving swiftly, I ran across the concrete to the door and peeked inside. My jaw dropped at what I saw. A group of men were gathered around a central area, and inside…was that a ring? Yes, I could see two men fighting in the ring.

What the fuck?

Backing away, my mind raced to make sense of everything. A yell from the back of the warehouse sounded and spurred me into action. Spinning away from the door, I bolted across the yard.

My wolf rushed forward, and I used her strength to run faster—I wasn’t looking to be caught again. I’d figure out who attacked me, but I’d do it on my terms, not theirs. I didn’t know where I was, but I could smell pine. There were woods nearby. I needed to get to them and then I could shift.

A loud crack split the night, followed by another crack, and pain ricocheted into me.

My feet tripped over themselves, and I was falling forward, losing the wrench as I fell. My shoulder was burning, and I was aware of wetness. The smell of blood surrounded me.

Landing face down, I yelled out in pain at the impact as my shoulder jarred against the hard ground. Rolling onto my back, I clutched my shoulder, struggling to stand. Three figures were running toward me.

Moving quickly, despite the pain, I ran again. I heard the crack again, and I ducked, knowing now it was gunfire. Ducking did no good. The shot hit my left calf.

Screaming in pain, I fell again.

Quicker than I would have liked, three men stood above me. Looking up, I looked at the strangers’ faces, and then I watched the third one step forward, fear coiling in my belly.

“Bullet.”

“Hey, bitch…miss me?” he snarled right before his boot came down heavily on my face, knocking me out cold.

I awoke in the back of a truck.

My hands were tied again, the pull on my shoulder excruciating around the area where I’d been shot. My feet were tied too, my left leg numb from the blood loss and the cramped position I was in.

“She’s bleeding a lot,” the man in the back with me said to the two in front.

“Good,” Bullet grunted, and I realized he was driving. “I want her alive for the next bit, but if she dies, well…I won’t shed a tear for the bitch.”

I felt a hand run over my hip, lingering there, and I forced myself to remain still. “She’s too pretty to die,” the man said quietly, his hand moving closer to my jeans button.

Bullet heard him, though. “She’s a stuck-up bitch who deserves what’s coming to her,” Bullet growled out.

I heard shuffling, like someone was moving in their seat, and the third one spoke, “You said we could play with her before she dies… Have you changed your mind?” he grumbled, and I knew with absolute certainty what “play” meant.

The truck came to an abrupt stop, and it knocked me forward, the air in my lungs whooshing out of me. My shoulder struck the seat in front, and I inhaled sharply at the pain.

“She’s awake,” the guy in the back with me said.

Giving up the pretense, I looked up and met Bullet’s hate-filled glare. “Good. The next part’s not as much fun when they’re unconscious.”

Panic swirled in my belly. I felt faint from the blood loss, but I could heal. They planned to kill me and much more than that before they took my life.
