“No, I guess not.” Pulling the door open, I lifted my hand in a wave. “See you, Vance.”

I didn’t hear his reply. I had already turned in fear, my eyes searching the darkness. Slowly, I stepped out of the cabin. Lifting my chin to sniff the air, I felt my wolf prowl closer.

He walked up the path, the gloominess of night parting for him as he stepped into the dim light. Shadows accentuated his sharp features in the darkness, but his deep green eyes met mine and held as he approached.

Fear ran down my spine as I met the hard, unyielding glare of an alpha.

“Pup.”

“Cannon.” Looking behind him, I saw two more shifters. Vance was saying something behind me, but I couldn’t hear him over the thumping of my heart as I looked at the alpha.

“Kezia,” Cannon warned softly. “Don’t.”

I darted out the door, and at the side of the house, I shifted midrun. My wolf ran straight for the trees, and as I ran from Cannon and his pack, I heard the howls of pursuit behind me, urging me to run faster.

I knew these woods, and I ran through them swiftly as I headed to the mountains beyond.

A black wolf barreled into me, knocking me flying. My wolf landed with a thump, but I was already urging her to her feet. We ran again, but the second wolf hit me, and I was knocked down again, landing on my back.

Twisting to get up, his shadow fell over me.

Stop!

The power of the alpha had my wolf whimpering in submission. Her head lowered, and I knew I was caught.

Shift.

Naked and panting in the snow, I raised my head in defiance as I looked up at Cannon’s wolf. He was magnificent, taller than any wolf I’d seen. His coat was a deep black. His shift to man was seamless, and I averted my eyes as he stood naked before me.

“Nikan,” Cannon ordered, and I looked up as his brother handed him a thick flannel shirt. “Not me, her.”

Startled, I accepted the offered shirt from the alpha’s brother. Quickly, I pulled it on and was instantly hit with the familiar smell—cedarwood and nutmeg.

“How long have you been following me?” I asked as I buttoned the shirt.

“How long have you been running?” Cannon asked with a smirk, pulling on a pair of basketball shorts.

I ignored him. “What now?” I refused to meet his eyes, the numbness I felt not only because of my bare feet in the snow.

“Back to the pack,” Cannon told me. “Come.” He turned away from me.

“If I refuse?”

He looked at me over his shoulder. “You misunderstand, pup. I’m not asking.”

I refused to move, and with a huff of displeasure, the alpha walked the short distance back to me, picked me up, and unceremoniously tossed me over his shoulder. His arm clamped over the back of my legs like a solid band as he walked and ignored my protests and struggles.

I heard an engine approach, and trying to twist to see what was happening, I gave up when the hold on my lower body remained unmoving.

“Open it,” Cannon ordered someone.

I heard a creak and someone asking him if he was sure, and then I was shoved into a cage.

A cage.

“Are you out of your mind?” I shouted at him as I shook the bars of the cage.

“Quiet.” The force of the alpha command silenced me. The alpha couldn’t stop my glare, though, and the bastard smiled at me. “Glare at me all you want, pup.” With a low laugh, he got in the truck and then we were driving up the mountains. “Take us home, brother.”
