I’d let my control slip.

In my state of arousal, I’d lost my hold on her.

My wolf knew it.

When he commanded me to shift again as he lowered my legs to the cell floor and stepped back away from me, I knew I’d lost as she broke free.

CHAPTER 18

Cannon

As she lay on the cot, I watched her sleeping.

Thick blonde hair so light it looked white made her skin appear paler, sicker. The girl looked like a day in the sunshine would kill her, like the vampire myths humans liked to invent.

She’d been sleeping for hours, and had I not been able to hear her breathing, I would have checked her pulse a long time ago. It didn’t help she hadn’t moved from where her wolf had relinquished control.

I knew shifters. I was an alpha, for Luna’s sake, but her wolf…I grit my teeth as my jaw clenched hard. Her wolf was as wild and untamed as she was. It barely acknowledged an alpha command—I’d had to put my Will on her three times to yield to me.

Three fucking times.

And still, I could see the defiance in every movement as she submitted.

My wolf was restless within me. I hadn’t let him come forth as I battled the defiant fighter in front of me. I was an alpha. I was strong, and my Will in human form was enough.

It was a cruel thing to force another to do something against their will. My father had abused his power in the pack, which is why I didn’t do it, and I sure as hell never broke my pack’s will as a wolf.

My pack respected me as their leader. Their alpha.

But the girl in front of me, who couldn’t weigh more than a hundred and ten pounds soaking wet, had pushed me further than anyone—man or wolf—to wanting to bring my wolf forth and crush her defiance with my will.

I heard Royce come into the room and walked up to stand beside me. I didn’t need to see his face to feel his worry. We were pack.

“She still out?” he asked in surprise. I felt him turn to look at the remains of the two deer. “At least her belly is full.”

Royce was my beta, my second-in-command. For all his size and brawn, he was a huge softie. Being a husband and father of two girls, he had struggled the most with my plan to weaken Kezia.

“She’s going to be louder and shriller when she wakes,” I reminded him. “Don’t be too pleased she’s finally full just yet.”

He gave a soft grunt but said nothing further. We’d both witnessed the white wolf devour the deer. Her coat had been half red by the time she was sated. The overriding hunger had taken precedence over her other needs. When I commanded her to shift and stepped back to show her the deer, I’d taken a gamble.

Thank the Goddess it paid off.

It was not my desire to bring harm to either of them. Had the wolf still been riding her heat, it could have turned violent. As it was, all I had to prepare for now was Kezia’s fury when she woke.

And she would be furious.

“You’re smiling,” Royce said beside me. “You’re anticipating the fallout?”

“She’s quite vicious with her words,” I told him with a low chuckle. “I think she swears more than I do.”

Royce snorted in answer. “Your brother is glaring at everyone who looks at him,” he changed the subject.

My smile faded. “He doesn’t understand.”

“Because you never told him why.”

“He doesn’t need to know.” I heard him inhale and knew he was about to start lecturing. “Beta…” I spoke softly. “This is my choice.”
