“No.”

He was equally calm and reasonable, and I had a nagging suspicion he could maintain this façade a lot longer than I could.

“Why?” I even forced a fake smile. “I’m no threat.”

Cannon snorted, and I watched as he shook his head slightly. “You’re dangerous.”

“Are you scared of me?” I mocked him. “I think your thigh is thicker than my waistline.”

Cannon gave me a flat stare. “You are a trained fighter, you are a hunter, and more importantly, pup, you are a killer.”

“We’re all hunters,” I snarled. “We’re shifters. If we don’t hunt, we don’t eat. Shifters are killers by nature.”

“The blood on your hands is human.” He saw my wince as he spoke, but carried on regardless. “The shifters in my pack are hunters and fighters, but no one in my pack has killed three men and has a national manhunt searching for them.”

“I told you I was defending myself.” I stared at my hands. “Is your pack not allowed to defend themselves against those who would cause them harm?”

“Yes. They can. And any shifter who was in control would have fought their way free and ran.”

Lifting my head, I met his glare. “So you encourage cowards in your pack?” I challenged him, holding his stare.

His sneer was ugly. “A coward is someone who uses their speed, strength, and supernatural powers to their advantage over a weaker opponent.”

My brother would say the same, and the thought of Kris knowing what I did filled me with a heavy sadness. He’d be so disappointed in me. Would he understand? Would anyone?

“He shot me three times, then he kicked me in the face, knocking me out,” I whispered, breaking his stare. “I came to in the back of a truck. The guy they had me with, he was going to…” I swallowed past the lump in my throat. “He was going to use me. They said…” I took another breath as I remembered my fear.

“They were going to rape you,” Cannon finished for me, and even though he had gentled his voice, the tone was still hard. “I believe you. I know what men can do.” His heavy sigh made me glance at him, staring at the far wall, his expression unreadable. “But you are not just a woman, pup.” He turned his head to look at me. “You are stronger than them, quicker, and you are more than human.”

I dropped my head from his stare. “I was hurt and scared.” I felt the tears fall. “I was alone. There were three of them, and I’d fought Bullet. I knew he was strong and fast.” Angrily, I wiped my eyes. “I was weak. I wasn’t healing, I had blood loss, was weak in a corner, and I didn’t know how to get out.”

“So you shifted? When you know pack law expressly forbids it.”

My eyes closed against his words. Wearily, I lifted my head and met the cold stare of an alpha. “Pack law?” I asked, my top lip curling upward. “As I lay in that back seat with a filthy man’s hand on my jeans button and their intent obvious that they were going to use me until I broke, you know what I remembered, Alpha?”

“What?”

I stood slowly, wiping my eyes dry as I stepped forward, looking up at him through the bars. “That I was no longer pack.” He didn’t react. “So I let her come forward, and I ripped out his filthy throat.”

“His? What did you do to the others?”

I looked away. “The same.”

“Did you?” I heard him move. “Pup?”

I turned away from him. “I ripped out their throats.”

The cell door opened, and I stiffened as I heard him enter the cage. Large hands landed on my shoulders, and I was gently turned to face him.

“Look at me,” he commanded softly.

Reluctantly, I raised my head. “Come to try your seduction tricks on me again?”

“Stop that.” His finger pressed against my lips. “Tell me how you killed them, Kezia.” I jerked my head away, but he grabbed the nape of my neck, holding me firm. “How did you kill them?” he pressed.

“Painfully.”

I saw the reprimand in his eyes. “The truth, pup.”
