“One thing at a time,” Royce grumbled. He looked me over. “Turn again.”

I did as he asked, this time pulling the shirt over my ass as I felt them both approach. I ignored Cannon’s huff of amusement at my not-so-subtle attempt at modesty.

“Make sure the door is locked,” Cannon spoke to Royce, and I heard the cell door open. He was in the same space as me again. Not that the room wasn’t the same space, but there were usually bars between us.

My heartbeat picked up. I saw his knowing smirk, and I dropped my gaze as I tried to calm myself. This was stupid. He was just a shifter. I’d been around shifters all my life.

“Lift your leg,” he instructed, and I did as he asked, my teeth biting hard on my lip when he stroked his hand over my calf.

With a light touch, he circled the wound. Luna help me, my legs felt like jelly. I breathed out slowly when he lowered my left leg, but when his hand gripped my upper thigh, I had to bite back a moan.

“She’s right. Look,” he said. “Don’t touch her,” he scolded Royce sharply.

I turned my head to look down at him, my lips parted in surprise. Cannon glanced up at me but said nothing.

“Why didn’t you mention this before?” he asked me, his thumb pressing into the circle-shaped scar left by the bullet hole.

“I didn’t realize until just now,” I admitted. “You believe me?”

“Turn.”

I did, quickly. His face was level with my panties, and I almost swallowed my tongue as I felt his sharp exhale against the thin material. Cannon pushed to his feet, his chest rubbing across my breasts. I stepped back reflexively, but he grabbed my arm and held me still.

“Stay,” he commanded softly. I couldn’t hide the shiver when his fingers trailed over my skin to my shoulder. “This is small.”

I went to speak, but the sudden dryness in my mouth made me cough. “Sorry,” I spluttered. “Exit wound. He shot me from behind.”

“Chickenshit,” Royce grunted, and I’d completely forgotten he was in the cell with us.

Cannon moved me slightly, his body pressed against mine as he half twisted us so he could see the wound. “Fuckers,” he hissed, his finger rubbing over my skin.

“I’ve never seen it myself,” Royce spoke to his alpha. “Thought it was one of the crazier myths humans made up.” He glanced at me. “Did it hurt any differently?”

I shook my head. “I’ve never been shot before,” I told him, lifting my hand to rub my shoulder. “It burned and was hot. But that could be normal?” I shrugged. “When I came to in the truck…” My voice dropped as I spoke to him, ignoring the male who stood beside me, pressing into my side, supporting me as I leaned into him reflexively. “I was drowsy and not healing. I could feel the blood loss and knew how weak I was.”

Royce’s eyes flickered with sympathy. “Why didn’t you notice this?”

I thought he was talking to me, but I felt Cannon stiffen. “I thought it was her.” I almost interrupted when he carried on. “She’s so pale skinned, she looks like sunlight would kill her.”

“You are very pale,” Royce told me with a slight smile. He let out a loud sigh. “I know little to nothing about silver bullets,” he admitted. “Should I get Doc?”

“No.”

I looked up at him and saw him staring down at me. “How many times were you shot, pup?”

It felt wrong to be called pup when I was half naked in his arms, and I tried to move free of his hold, but Cannon merely tightened his grip.

“I just told you,” I answered with a glare. “Three times.”

“In the leg.”

“Why do you do that?” I demanded. “Why make it like I lie? You heard me quite clearly tell you once in the calf, once in the thigh, and once in the shoulder.”

He held my stare. I knew he knew I was strung too tight as his fingers caressed my skin, his actions in contrast to the hardness of his stare.

“Three times,” Cannon murmured, and my head dropped with heaviness when his fingers massaged the back of my neck. Deft fingers pulled my hair over my shoulder, his breath on my neck causing me to shiver once more.

“Should I, um…leave you two?” Royce asked, stepping back.
