“Still fine.”

Arrogant and hateful jerk. “I need the bathroom.”

“We need to talk.”

“Want me to pee on the floor?”

“For fuck’s sake, pup, I didn’t mean you couldn’t go to the bathroom.”

“You should say that.” I stood and walked to the corner of the room. “We’ll talk when I’m done.” But I’d already been to the toilet, and I didn’t want to admit I just didn’t want to have the talk with him, even though I knew I had to have the talk with him. So, I stood behind my sheet and thought about what the fuck I was doing.

“You okay?” he asked me.

Fuck.

I started to brush my teeth.

“Are you stalling?” Cannon asked, pushing the sheet aside, seeing me sitting on the toilet lid, brushing my teeth. “Really?” His smirk earned him a tube of toothpaste being thrown at him, which he dodged easily. With a shake of his head, he dropped the sheet and left me to it. Using the hose, I poured water into my hand to rinse, lifted the toilet lid, spat, and flushed.

With no reason left to hide, I stepped out from my sheet again, my eyes wide when I saw Cannon sitting on my cot, facing me, a pillow at his back against the bars.

“Comfortable?” I asked him with a pointed glare at his boot dangling off the side of my bed.

“It’s got potential,” he answered.

“How am I your mate?” I blurted.

He stared at me steadily. “Because the Goddess has a twisted sense of humor.”

I waited for him to say something else, and when he didn’t, I felt my temper rising. “That’s it? Luna thinks she’s funny?”

Cannon shrugged. “I don’t know, pup. Why do you think you’re my mate?” he asked with exasperation.

“I don’t,” I snapped back. “Having a mate has never entered my mind. And if it did, it would never, ever be you.”

Cannon’s face twisted into a bitter smile. “Right back at you, pup.”

We stared at each other, and I had no idea what to do. He remained on my bed, watching me, his face blank, his eyes void of emotion. How was he so cold? How could Luna do this to me?

He was infuriating.

He was hard and cruel.

He was my jailor.

“This isn’t right,” I mumbled. “Mates are…” I floundered.

“Destined,” Cannon said with a snort.

“Stupid,” I blurted at the same time. He raised an eyebrow, and I flung my hands up in despair. “You detest me. I don’t like you either. Mates are supposed to be in love and stuff.”

“Says who?” Cannon asked curiously. “How many mates have you known?”

I stared at him blankly. “What? You know I haven’t been with anyone.”

Cannon tutted as he sat up farther on the bed. “Sit.” He pointed to the end of the cot and caught my dubious look. “Just sit, Kezia,” he said with a low growl. “You don’t need to fight me on everything.”

I sat on the cot’s edge as far away from him as possible, a fact he noticed and one that made his smirk more irritating than usual. “Now what?” I snapped at him. “I’m sitting.”
