Then why did it feel like a big fat lie?

CHAPTER 25

Kezia

“Cannon will be looking for me,” I told my brother as I still tried to process that Landon thought he was my mate.

Kris frowned, watching me. “Then you come with me now and forget what I said.” He looked away from me, his eyes focused to the west, where the Blackridge Peak packlands were located. “Let the bastard come get you,” he said grimly. “Let him try.”

“I thought you wanted to talk to Bale first,” I reminded him. “I mean, it’s a lot to take in…”

“The shaman will keep you safe,” Kris said with a half shrug.

“Keep me safe?” I asked curiously. “Why do I need to be safe?”

Kris grinned. “Safe is the wrong word, but Landon will know as soon as you’re back that you’re within slobbering distance.” I grimaced, and my brother laughed in delight. “For all that I hate the idea…” he said good-naturedly, “you’ll understand when you feel the bond kick in.”

I wouldn’t bet on it, brother.

“Yeah, it’s destiny, right?” I tried to sound jovial despite my sarcasm.

“It feels like so much more,” he said wistfully, a faraway dreamy look in his eyes.

I was going to barf. If I ever looked at Cannon, or anyone, like that, I was going to shoot myself with a silver bullet. Right between the eyes.

Cannon. I bit my lip as I glanced over my shoulder in the direction my brother had looked earlier.

“We need to move. If he finds me, he won’t let me go without a fight.”

Kris’s grin was vicious. “Then we give him a fight.”

“All right, Mr. Feisty,” I joked as I patted my brother on the shoulder. “Let’s not get carried away. You ready to run?” I asked him, my fingers on the hem of my shirt.

Kris nodded, and I turned my back, then quickly undressed, packing the clothes away neatly so they were there for us to use again. My wolf came forward, and the tawny wolf was waiting when we turned.

Our wolves were delighted to be free together. My wolf charged at her wolf brother, and soon they were playing and running, making up for lost time. As we reached the border of the Anterrio packlands, my wolf caught a scent and swiveled swiftly, her paws taking a few steps toward the mountain peak in the distance.

Moonstar, come.

She hesitated, taking another step forward away from her wolf brother.

What is it? I asked her. What do you smell? Is it him?

Moonstar!

She jerked her head to look at the tawny wolf, her eyes narrowing.

Now! He commanded. Come, we go home to the pack.

It is not our home. They are not our pack.

I saw my brother’s wolf’s top lip curl at her thought. I didn’t want him to be angry, so I came forward, her attention shifting to me.

I know it doesn’t feel like home, but it will, although it might be different this time, I tried to persuade her. He is our pack.

This is not where we should be. She turned to look back again.

Please, I whispered. We can’t go back to him. You know that. He lies. He shot us with silver.
