Amartis lingers, then walks out of the office, but stops in the same place the princess stopped.

He elbows me in the belly, making me expel a breath.

“You call her a good girl and use her attraction to you to tell her to walk herself to prison. That’s a new low, D’Artaron.”

“It’s not a prison.”

Brown eyes narrow as he side-eyes me.

“Fine, it is a prison. But a royal one, so she’ll be comfortable.”

“She is Chloe, your best friend’s baby sister, a sweet girl I’ve known since she was a baby. Whatever you think she did, I’m sure she’s innocent.”

“You’ve been assigned to her precisely because I trust you with her. That said, the Summer Court and the people here are my priority. Her innocence is seductive, and I can’t afford to fall for her tricks.”

“Chloe is not her sister.”

“That’s not what I said.”

“But I know females did a number on you, even if you won’t admit it.”

I grit my teeth. “They all chose their own paths. Mine led me here.”

“No tricks, D’Artaron,” Amartis says. “The girl is the real deal. Unspoiled and of good heart. When will you tell us what happened and what she’s doing here?”

“When I learn the truth.”

“When will that be?”

“Soon.”

“While she remains your captive?”

“Enough, Amartis. A powerful royal from another court invaded my shores with over a hundred active portals. If she were anyone else, she’d already be dead, so a little pampered prison time won’t hurt her.”

“Alestho will come for her when he hears about this.”

I snort. “With what? His wine snippers? I’m already shivering with fear.”

“Still bitter that he chose the farm over your choice, I see. Let’s hope loyalty to that ruthless king of yours pays well, because you are trading what bit of warmth you have left in your heart for a lifetime of loneliness.” Amartis walks away.

“It pays fine!” I shout after him.

He lifts his middle finger.

I want to lift mine, but can’t, because the commander of the Summer fae armies doesn’t communicate in such vulgar ways. I close my office door and lift my middle finger at the door. “Fuck this span. Fuck it hard.”

CHLOE

Amartis catches up to us, and with his introspective, borderline-brooding personality, I don’t make conversation, but take in my surroundings. Since the commander brought me into his office via a portal and seeing as how I was in shock and in a frenzy when I arrived, I didn’t notice the outside of the office.

We march across a large courtyard while uniformed guards appear behind us as if placed there by magic. But in fact, I bet they’ve hidden there all along. While all fairies wield the power of glamour, illusion magic or incognito magic is something altogether different.

The guards fall into formation and march behind us as we exit the courtyard, the iron birds of prey D’Artaron conjured up earlier all gone.

Thankfully.
