Unless, of course, one finds their fae-ted mate. But that’s rare, and besides, the fates decide those couplings. While I serve the fates, the notion that they control my love life and who I will end up with sits like a pebble in my boot.

I control myself, my decisions, my life.

Which is why I must power through the arousal this evening when I’m around the little princess.

Or not so little.

She’s a grown female who I find attractive. Submissive demeanor. Chaotic, powerful magic. Sinful curves. And her breasts… I squeeze my balls, and the pain ripples through my lower belly. I want to slap her breasts until they’re as fiery red as her hair.

I lean forward and slam my forehead on the desk. “Stop it. Stop it. Stop it.”

A throat clears.

I lift my head. Benoit stands at the door. How long has he been there? Have I lost my mind and allowed someone to sneak up on me? Unacceptable. Utterly unacceptable.

“I’m sorry to bother you while you’re going through”—he makes a circle with his hand—“all that.”

“Can I help you?”

He nods. “I’m so happy you asked. You can help me, yes, and since you’ve rudely appointed me to deal with all the delicate matters of the court, I don’t feel bad about intruding on your private time.”

“Your passive aggression is duly noted.”

“Good.” He flips his blond wing, and a fake metal tiara falls off his head. My magic grabs it and hands it back to him. Not fake. The tiara is real.

“Thank you.” He fixes it back up.

“You are not supposed to wear Fleur’s tiara.”

I think he might cry, so I sigh and lift my palm. “You can wear it. Wear whatever makes you feel good.” Since Fleur is sleeping in a coffin at the bottom of the Winter Court’s palace, her duties keep piling up.

“Her tiara gives me the strength to deal with assholes.”

“Perhaps I need one, then.”

“Oh no, you’re the asshole.”

I walked right into that one. “I don’t have a lot of time, so state your purpose.”

“I can’t deal with the things the royals should be dealing with and also tend to my own duties.”

“I understand,” I tell him. Fates, do I ever understand. “But you will and you must.”

Silence as Benoit deals with his new assignments. Some people must be allowed to freak out over a change in their routine before they can accept the change and create a new routine. It will take him some time, but he will execute his responsibilities well. I’m confident in this male. He’s one of our finest, or my king wouldn’t have him as his valet.

“Okay, Commander, okay. Thank you for listening. I feel better after the short vent.” With a heavy sigh, he says, “I presume the Spring royal will need caring for. Shall I do that?”

I shake my head. “Her magic is dangerous, and I can’t hand her over to just anyone. Whatever you think she might need for our trip, please have it ready.”

Benoit pales instantly. “You’re going somewhere?”

“Only briefly.” My magic takes hold of the chair and slides it toward him lest he faint and hurt himself. The last thing he wants to hear is that I’m leaving him the entire court.

He sits down. “How long is briefly?”

“I must meet with the king, and she, the princess, is coming with me.”

“Oh no. No, no, no. The portals are all closed, and the journey to the Winter Court is too long. Even if you get there, nobody is allowed inside the court while Fleur is sleeping. The vamp wasn’t joking when he said he’d kill anyone who breaks his orders.”
