“I’ll be right there, Lucas. Get Jax.”

“Already here.” His voice echoed through the door.

I pulled on my combat pants, boots, and a black T-shirt; my gaze locked on Mariah the entire time. My muscles bunched and tensed. The idea of leaving my mate’s side was intolerable, but I couldn’t take her anywhere near Tomas, either.

She bit her lip, and I went to her, grabbing her up in my arms and pressing my lips to hers in a hard, possessive kiss. Her fingers dug into my shirt as she kissed me back, fueled by the wild emotions raging through us both.

Mariah pulled back. “Come back to me in one piece.” It was a demand. “Otherwise, I’ll never forgive you.”

I grinned, kissing her again, my fingers tangled in her hair.

“This ends tonight,” I said as I released her and turned to the door. Her eyes burned into my back when I turned to look back at her. “I love you.”

She nodded, her eyes molten amber. “I love you.”

Lucas and Jax were waiting at the bottom of the stairs. “You know the drill. Jax, you guard the house. Lucas, we’ll shift and fly over to the gate.”

My phone vibrated in my pocket. Both men’s eyes landed on me. Tension spiked while I pulled my phone out and saw the number of the front gate flash on the screen.

I glanced back at my men. They looked ready for battle, ready to stand by my side and face whatever came our way.

I answered the call.

“Evan.” Satisfaction dripped from his voice.

“Tomas.” My gums ached as my fangs threatened to extend.

“I have a guard of yours at the front gate. I have to say, I’m disappointed. I expected him to put up more of a fight. I guess you just don’t know how to train them properly, do you? Pity. You had such potential.”

“Go to hell.” My dragon roared within, the alpha mark on my shoulder burning as I called on my full alpha power. Tomas was too cocky. We may have underestimated him before, but now he didn’t realize just what he was messing with: a true alpha dragon, ready to defend his mate and children with his life, and blessed with the weight of responsibility.

Tomas made a tsk-tsk sound. “Such language. Don't you care about the life of your guard? Then, you won’t mind if I hurt him?”

A cracking sound, followed by a pained scream, rang through the phone.

“You'll regret this,” I snarled.

“Really? Do you think so?” He chuckled. “You can’t defeat me. You can end this now, Evan, and no one has to suffer. Just bring her to me, and everyone can walk away.”

“Just do it, Evan.”

I whirled around at the sound of Mariah’s voice. She stood on the bottom step fully dressed, and from the look of it, she’d heard every word.

“What are you doing?” I muttered. Had she lost her mind?

“Listen to the woman, Evan. She clearly has more intelligence than you.”

I hung up on him, my jaw tight, and strode over to her. “Go back upstairs, Mariah.”

She shook her head. “I won’t let him take me. He’s outnumbered. How does he plan to kidnap me if I’m in dragon form? I can fight.”

“No,” I growled. I wouldn’t let Mariah anywhere near that monster. “You need to stay where it’s safe. Jax can take you to the bunker while we meet him at the front gate.”

“And then what?” She threw her hands up. “He’ll kill everyone there.”

“We’re stronger than him. We can put an end to him.” My blood boiled with the need for vengeance. I didn’t care what I’d promised Matthew. Tomas wouldn’t be walking away alive tonight.

“Let me go with you.” Jax stepped to my side. “Maybe I can talk some sense into my father.”
