“Leave me alone,” he said, hurrying toward the kitchen.

I laughed, taking another crate of wine from a young woman who came in right behind Travis. She wasn’t struggling with the weight, but I wasn’t about to just stand around while my pack members did all the work, especially now that my excuse of flirting with my wife was gone.

We got everything unpacked from the truck, and when we were done, Travis looked around, checking for eavesdropping ears before getting close to me. “So? You got your cute little date planned out?”

“I do,” I said. “She already knows we’ve got plans tonight.”

“Perfect,” he said. “See, I knew that wine would help you. You’re welcome.”

“I’m about to demote your ass,” I joked.

“You would be lost without me. Don’t lie.”

“How do you manage to make everything sound homoerotic?”

“You know, it’s a talent I cultivated, actually,” he joked before blowing me a kiss. “All the manliness, and a perfect ass to go along with it.”

“Why are you talking about your ass?” came a third voice from the doorway. We both looked over, surprised to see Lana coming in the door.

“Hey, you,” I said. “We just got all the stuff for the fundraiser, wasn’t expecting you to come up this way.”

“I feel like micromanaging,” she said.

“In other words, she’s feeling anxious,” Travis said.

“Would you shut the hell up?” Lana barked.

“Love you too, honey,” he said sarcastically.

“Nothing to be anxious about, Lana,” I said. “We got all the stuff you requested, and Marley’s got a handle on all the little logistical things that need to be done the day of the event. Everything’s already ordered and scheduled so that if she’s down for the count after her injection, it’s already worked out.”

“I love that woman,” Lana said with a sigh. “Where is she, anyway? Her phone is here.”

“Do you have a LoJack on my wife?” I asked her incredulously.

“We all share our location, thank you very much,” Lana said in a clipped tone. “It’s dangerous out here for a woman, especially one who can’t turn into a giant wolf. Now, tell me where your wife is.”

“Your boyfriend scared her off by whistling at us when I was enjoying my husband privileges,” I said. “She’s somewhere keeping herself busy upstairs.”

“Wha—actually, never mind. I don’t want to know. I’m going to go bug her,” Lana said, turning away from us and hurrying up the stairs.

“Man...I was excited to have some Lana time. She’s been so busy lately that we’ve barely seen each other,” Travis griped.

“Well, maybe you’ll think a little harder about whether or not you want to send her best friend away in an embarrassed tizzy next time,” I pointed out. “And if not, then we’re at least even for you scaring my wife off.”

“Whatever,” Travis said, rolling his eyes. “Alright. So, now that Lana’s out of earshot, is there anything else that needs to get done before the fundraiser?”

“Eh, just the day-of stuff. I figure you and I and a few volunteers could go and make sure it gets done with Marley’s supervision if she’s feeling shitty from the first injection.”

“Okay, cool. That sounds good,” Travis said. “Shouldn’t be too hard, then. And if we do it early enough in the day, we can avoid Lana’s neuroticism.”

“A win-win situation for everyone,” I remarked.

“Oh, Farrah called me while I was at CostClub. She said there’s no real movement, from what our lookouts can tell. Every night, they seem to just be partying at the clubhouse, and then they spend most of the day sleeping.”

“Good, that’s a relief to hear. Less to worry about on the day of the fundraiser.”

“Do we still think Curt’s even going to do anything? I mean, we haven’t heard anything from them since the day they threw a bunch of papers all over the building,” Travis said. “Maybe they’re just being pests for the sake of being pests.”
