Page 105 of Awakening His Mate

Her gaze darts between me and her mate. “It was the only way, Jacks. We needed to know the spell, and I don’t know any other alphas?—”

I cross the room, pulling her to me as I squeeze her to my chest. I know what it must have cost her to talk to those people again. I can tell by how pale she is and how on edge my alpha is as he hovers close to her. “Thank you,” I say into her ear before I pull back, releasing her when Cade tugs his mate against him, his eyes narrowed on me.

“We want to help,” Halle says, her cheeks stained pink. “Klaus gave us the spell to use, if you’ll let us try.”

I glance over my shoulder at Dove, who nods, a smile dancing on her lips.

“Yeah, we want to try,” I say as I hold a hand out to her.

She takes it eagerly. “You can really do it? We can be mates?”

“I think so,” Cade answers. “If nothing else, you’ll have a pack link, which is better than nothing.”

It is, but I want the carrot they’ve dangled in front of me. I want Dove to be mine completely.

“You trust me enough to be in your pack?” Dove’s words make my alpha wince, even though they are playful.

“I do,” he says. “Maybe this is a fresh start for us all.”

“And the others?” I ask, needing to be sure Sawyer and Wyatt are also on board with this. I don’t want Dove to experience any bad feelings through the bond.

“They’re fine with it,” Halle answers before giving her mate her attention. “Are you ready?”

Cade nods. Dove’s helplessness is replaced by a serenity I really like seeing on her face. She holds my hands in hers, her eyes magnetized to me.

I feel and smell the faint magic as Cade uses his alpha power to create a pack bond with Dove. It’s only a matter of minutes before her awareness is in my head. My mind and my wolf are suddenly at ease as I sense her. It’s not a mating bond, but it’s a start.

Can you hear us? Halle asks.

This is weird. Dove’s voice is a balm to my soul. My wolf is pleased to have the link—something that will allow me to always be close to her.

You get used to it, Sawyer answers. Though no dirty talk on the pack link. This line is not for that shit.

Are you worried we’ll do it better than you?

The challenge in Dove’s voice makes me snort a laugh. Don’t encourage his behavior, I say. Welcome, baby.

Thank you.

You can just mute him if he gets annoying, Wyatt says. Or ignore him. We all do that, or at least we try to. He’s worse than a pup.

Screw you, Sawyer fires back. Cade, if Halle and Dove are pack now, I want Roux in as well.

We’ll talk about this later. We’re busy.

Right. Go get mated, Sawyer says.

The pack link falls silent, and Dove stares at me. “I didn’t know it’d be so loud,” she says. “How do you get anything done with all of them talking to you?”

I lean into her so I can speak softly. “Why do you think I mute it?”

She laughs, and I swear I’m going to make her this happy every damn day for the rest of our lives if it means hearing that sound again.

“Are you guys ready?” Cade asks. The nervous timbre of his voice doesn’t go unnoticed.

“Yeah, we’re ready,” Dove says, gripping my hands tighter.

“Whatever happens, thank you for trying,” I add, my gaze lingering on Halle.
