A surprised sound rises from his throat, and his arms come around me, his fire rising in silent offer. “Are you well, my lady?”

A shudder goes through me, my mind finally able to stop for the day and the shock of what could have happened sinking in.

“No.” I press my face against his neck. “I thought the Wild Hunt might be the one that got us this time.”

His hand smoothes down my back. “It did not, though.”

I lift my head to stare into his beautiful face and cup his jaw. “Thank you.”

He leans forward to gently kiss my lips. “When it comes to my lady, I will always protect you and those you love.”

“That’s because you’re a good and honorable man,” Flint says from behind me. “Even if your methods are sometimes questionable.”

Twisting in Darius’s lap, I find Flint coming out of the bedroom in a brand-new, dark-purple suit and charcoal dress shirt. Belatedly, I spot the tailoring kit open on the coffee table and realize they were in the middle of a fitting when I entered.

A smile spreads over my lips. “So, you finally caved.”

Flint gives me a scandalized look. “I would never. But since Darius just happened to have this beauty sitting around… Why not try it on?”

I turn back to my ignis demon and arch my brows. “Just sitting around, huh?”

“Completely coincidental that it was Flint’s size,” he says with a straight face.

“That color is perfect on you.” I climb off Darius’s lap to walk to Flint. “It reminds me of your eye.”

“You think?” Uncertainty fills his tone, and the glamour slips away to reveal the scars, the void left in one socket, and the otherworldly purple glow in his other.

“Beautiful.” I rise onto my toes to kiss his unscarred cheek, then the puckered skin on the opposite side. “Always so beautiful.”

“Truly lovely,” Darius agrees.

A shaky sigh escapes Flint, and his head turns, his tender lips finding mine.

My pulse quickens, spreading warmth through me in a way my inner fire could not, and my arms lift to wind around his neck.

“Gently, my lady.” The heat of Darius’s body sears my back. “The stitching isn’t final on that suit.”

Grumbling at the delay, I pull back to push the jacket off Flint’s shoulders.

“Careful with the seams, love.” He chuckles and steps back toward the bedroom, his fingers going to his buttons. “Let me take it off before you rip it apart. Darius, why don’t you keep Pen warm?”

He stills behind me. “You’re…inviting me to join you?”

Flint smirks. “It’s called putting old grudges to bed, is it not?”

A laugh escapes me. “Am I the grudge in that metaphor?”

Flint winks as he shrugs out of the shirt, exposing the lean lines of his body as he disappears from view.

Realizing we’re missing someone, I glance around. “Where’s Anny?”

“With Lia and the children.” Darius steps forward to pull me into a gentle embrace. “Star was still scared, so Flint asked her to stay there until tomorrow.”

It couldn’t have been easy to let his familiar leave his side. “That was nice of him.”

Darius traces the line of my jaw. “He is too kind when it comes to young ones.”

I tilt my head back. “Or just kind enough.”
