“Thanks to you,” she added.

“Oh, you mean when I unwittingly gave you exposure therapy for your fear of heights? Yeah, I’m sure that was—”

“The highlight of my night,” she finished. The intensity of her stare made my heart skip a beat. And her lips looked so welcoming, so… inviting.

But I promised.

“You know,” I said, taking a step toward her. “I promised I wouldn’t kiss you again, and I intend to keep that promise. But I’m warning you—if you were to initiate a kiss, I wouldn’t hold back. And I can’t guarantee I’d be able to stop.”

I’d given her a fair warning. She tried not to look at me as I dared her to kiss me with my eyes. Her hesitation didn’t worry me—the desire was right there. I could almost taste it. But would she give in?

Kendall let out a heavy sigh of defeat before yanking on the front of my flannel shirt to pull my body toward hers. I took the smallest, tumbling step forward as she brought her lips up to meet mine. I let her initiate it, but the second our mouths touched, I took control, holding her face in both of my hands. Her tongue tasted like caramel and cotton candy and risk and possibility. As her hands slid around my midsection, I dropped my own hands to cup her ass in them—turns out it was a little more than I could handle, after all. I grunted against her mouth before pulling away with a gentle tug, feeling myself go hard against her abdomen. I took a few short breaths, resting my forehead against hers.

“What’s wrong?”

“Just taking the time to appreciate you,” I said, giving her ass a hard squeeze that made her grin. I lowered my hands to that delicious spot at the top of her thighs. “All of you.”

I moved my lips to her neck, kissing and sucking on her skin. “Take me to your place,” I whispered, hooking two of my fingers beneath the waistband of her skirt.

“Can’t,” she said breathlessly. “Lesbian book club.”

I didn’t ask for an explanation. I needn’t explain why we couldn’t go back to my house, either. Though Finley would be sleeping two floors above me, it was still too risky. “Fuck,” I said before kissing her lips again. There was nowhere for us to go. I feared that if I didn’t fuck this woman very soon, we’d both come to our senses and the moment would forever be lost.

That was when we both turned to the still-inflated bouncy castle in unison. It was in the grassy area near the school entrance, half-hidden from the view of passing cars by the Ferris wheel.

I turned back to Kendall and raised an eyebrow at her in question. Surely we couldn’t—?

Her eyes twinkled.

Oh, yes.

Yes we could.

“Are we actually doing this right now?” Mason crawled between the flaps of the bouncy castle behind me, not laughing about this nearly as much as I was. We’d tossed our shoes on the ground outside—because we were rule followers, obviously.

“Don’t change your mind on me now,” I told him as we slid backwards against the vinyl toward the middle of the bouncy castle.

“Believe me, I’m not,” he said with a husky chuckle before pulling me down on top of him. I straddled his lap, a knee on either side of him, making a point not to sit on my skirt to give him easier access—an effort that was immediately rewarded. With his lips on mine and one hand cradling the back of my neck, his other hand slid up my thigh beneath my skirt. His fingers wasted no time at all slipping beneath the back of my panties, too, and he pressed his whole palm against my butt, squeezing me so hard he was probably going to leave five little fingertip-shaped bruises. It took my breath away. “I love watching your ass jiggle when you walk in the classroom,” he said in a low, growl-like voice.

I threw my head back to laugh, which he took as an invitation to kiss the front of my throat. It made me shiver. I brought my chin back down and focused on his eyes. His brows furrowed with worry. “Kendall,” he said, his throat bobbing. “I don’t—I don’t have anything on me.”

“I’m on birth control.”

He nodded, but the look of concern didn’t fade.

“We don’t have to do this, Mason.”

“No,” he said, moving both of his hands to my thighs. He kissed me again. “I want to. And this might be a really unsexy thing to say right now, but I just want to tell you—I got tested not that long ago. Over the summer. And I’m good.”

I grinned. “I did too—after Heath. All good here, too. And that’s not unsexy at all.” Come to think of it, Mason was the first man to ever take the time to mention such a thing to me, and I couldn’t think of anything sexier at the moment. I kissed him more tenderly after that exchange, and he matched my pace, returning his hands to my cheeks to hold my face as he kissed me back. With one hand, he brushed some of my hair out of my eyes before tucking it behind my ear. Slowly, he removed my cardigan, dropping it to the side before kissing my forehead. I wasn’t expecting this gentleness from him, this slowness—but I liked it.

“Are you cold?” he asked me.

I shook my head against his forehead. And before it even registered that his hand was inching up the back of my t-shirt, my bra was unfastened—and that same warm hand was already sliding to the front of my body. I tried not to think about how many bras Mason must have unhooked in his life to become so skilled at it, choosing instead to concentrate on the sensation of his fingers finding their way to one of my nipples. I removed my bra through one of my sleeves to make it easier on him, tossing it out of the way. If I had known I’d have Mason Reed undressing me that night, I might have worn something sexier than a plain white bra, but he was more interested in what was underneath, anyway.
