“I thought you went on a date with Luna. Brady told me. You screwed that up, huh?”

Well, that was a fail. “Wow,” I say. “I’m on your hit list today. That one stung, I’m not going to lie. Yes, we went on a date. No, I’m not going to see her anymore.”

Chelsea sighs. “Sorry. It’s just that I’m frustrated that you’re in Seattle. What’s the point of having a baby daddy if I can’t get Brady-free time?” she says, lightly.

“So this is all about wine with the sorority sisters, isn’t it?” I ask, finally getting a read on her mood.

“Yes. Obviously.”

“I heard you thought we wouldn’t make the playoffs.”

“That was just wishful thinking. Again, wine with sorority sisters. I just wanted a weekend away with me and Dev.”

“I’m sorry,” I say, and I mean that sincerely. “I know my job can be hard on the people in my life. I appreciate you, Chelsea.”

“I know. You’re a good father, Owen. Even if your job sucks.”

That makes me laugh. “So, you’re cool with Brady staying with Luna?”

“Oh, God, yeah. I don’t want his grumpy butt with me, that’s for damn sure.”

“Okay, good.” I pick the phone back up and put it to my ear. “And what if I had been dating Luna? Would that have been cool?”

“I thought you said she has a boyfriend, but you can date whoever you want as long as she’s not a drug dealer or user.”

“She does have a boyfriend. Two, actually.”

“An open relationship?”

“No. They’re in a relationship together. The three of them.”

“Oh.” She pauses as if taking that all in. Then she says, “Yeah, I don’t see that being your thing.”

She may be right, but I’m still annoyed and a little offended. “Why is that?”

“You like to be needed.”

The mother of my child with the truth bombs today. “That’s ironic, because I feel like I’m failing at being there for everyone.”

“Hey, no you’re not. Don’t say that. You’ve always been there for me and Dev, with Brady and Amara. I’m sorry for saying I didn’t want the Racketeers to make the playoffs to Brady. That was bitchy.”

“Just honest.” I’m not trying to make Chelsea feel bad. I’ve done enough of that lately.

“And bitchy.”

“A little,” I relent. “But you have every right.”

She laughs.

“Seriously, Chels. God, Brady is so full of attitude right now. Jump on a plane and drink as much wine in Pittsburgh as you can.”

“I plan to. I’ll call Brady now.”

“Sounds good. We’ll keep each other updated.”

“Of course. Good luck tonight. And I mean that.”

“Thank you. I appreciate that.”
