I hear a knock on my door, and I suck in a breath. He’s here. I can’t change, anyway. Okay, so this is what I’m wearing.

Ugh. I hate black.

I go to my door, take another breath, and pull it open.

I don’t hate the look on Owen’s face, though, when he first takes me in.

“Um, hi. Um, Luna, I’m—” Owen clears his throat. “Hi.”

I smile. I always feel a little rattled by Owen, but I think I do the same to him. “Hi.”

“You look absolutely amazing.”

“Thank you.” I let my gaze run over him from head to toe. He’s wearing a dark gray suit with a light blue button-down. No tie, but he does have a jacket on. “You do, too.”

“I’m really glad we’re doing this.”

“Me, too. Thanks for asking me.”

He gives a soft chuckle. “I barely resisted the first time we ever spoke.”

I really like this guy. “Well, I’m glad you didn’t resist any longer.”

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Of course.”

“As gorgeous as you look…why are you wearing black?”

I look down. “Is this not okay for tonight?”

“Well, it’s perfect. It’s just not what I pictured you in.”

I look up with a frown. “What do you mean?”

He gives me a soft smile. “You can wear whatever you want, but… it doesn’t seem like your usual choice. Do you wear a lot of black?”

I have no idea how he knows to question this, but I shake my head. “This is literally the only black thing I own.”

“That’s what I thought. You should change into something more you.”

“But black is sophisticated.”

He nods. “It can be. But I want to go out with Luna. You don’t have to dress up or act any certain way tonight. Just be you.” He pauses. “Unless you don’t want to change.”

I study him. It’s strange that he knows this about me, but I love that he’s this insightful. Is that an older man thing? A dad thing? Just an Owen thing? I’m not sure, but it makes me feel warm. Like he’s been paying attention and really thinking about me.

“I would really like to change.”

He smiles. “I’ll wait.”

I only take five minutes to shed the black dress and pull on a dress that’s a lot more me. It’s a multicolor, Boho style that ties at the waist. I pair it with strappy sandals, add some bangle bracelets and a couple more rings, but I leave my pendant necklace on. I smile into the mirror. Much better.

When I step out into the living room, his smile is wide and sincere. “Seriously gorgeous.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m surprised you even have a black dress.”
