The sound of it made her heart beat faster.

I’m not his girl—not really—he’d said as much yesterday, she reminded herself.

So, she wasn’t going to SuperTrim again. Not for the next four months, anyway. But after she moved into her own place, she was going to have to rebuild her business after turning down clients for six months. And that would only be after her charge got reduced to a misdemeanor, and she had no idea how long that could take.

No one was going to hire a felon for their IT needs.

She might not be able to even afford the discount hair salon. Amy might be cutting her hair once the new year started.

Were haircuts free in prison?

“I’ve got a morning call I need to prep for, then I need to go through a few reports,” he told her after they finished dinner.

She nodded to their dishes on the table. “I’ll clean up, then I think I’m going to take a hot bath and go to bed early. I’m beat. My first day took its toll.”

He stood and squeezed her biceps when he kissed her forehead. “I’ll be sure to be quiet when I come to bed so as not to wake you.”

She covered his hand on her arm with hers and gave him a flirtatious smile. “I wouldn’t mind being woken up.”

He stroked her cheek with the back of his fingertips from his free hand as he shook his head. “You need your rest, little bee.”

“I’m just saying, if you wrap your arms around me when you come to bed, I won’t be upset.” A tiny grin escaped her when she added, “Sir.”

She was a goddamn temptress. He wanted nothing more than to blow off work and hold her in his arms.

You’ve got more self-discipline than that, dude.

But the adorable line of freckles across her nose had him questioning himself.

Thankfully, his phone started to buzz. He looked down to see Parker’s name on the screen.

Liam kissed her temple before pulling away. “I’ve got to take this.”

As he walked toward his office, he clicked the green button to answer the call. “What’s going on? I hope you’re not still at the hospital.”

“Fuck no. Alexandra didn’t work today—my ass was out the door before six.”

“Good man.” Liam paused, then asked, “So, why are you calling me at nine o’clock, Daddy?”

“I was going to talk to you about it in the morning, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it couldn’t wait.”

Liam sat down at the desk in his office with a sigh. What fucking fire needed to be put out now?

“What happened?”

“The rumor mill is on fire wanting to know what’s going on with you and Utah. Helen said it’s all the buzz. I’m surprised Kathy didn’t say anything to you.”

“She had to leave early for a doctor’s appointment.” He picked up his pen and threw it across his desk. “Fuck! I figured as much when I noticed everyone staring in the cafeteria.”

“I know you’re not going to like hearing this, but you need to keep your relationship with her on the down low. Like, down-down low. You have to trust me on this.”

He’d noticed all the double takes they’d gotten and had started to think the same thing, but he didn’t like hearing it from Parker. Plus, lunch with her had been the highlight of his day—right until he’d fucked her on his desk and that became the highlight. The idea of not being able to do both of those again tomorrow didn’t appeal to him. Not to mention, he didn’t like other people dictating his decisions.

“I’m not worried. Even if there was a scandal and they let me go, I’ve got plenty of money if it took me a while to find something. But it wouldn’t… I’d have a new job like that.” And although Parker couldn’t see it, he snapped his fingers to emphasize his point
