He kissed her temple then continued, “No, I have something else in mind for you.”

“I don’t understand you sometimes.”

He cocked his head. “What do you mean?”

“You run hot and cold. I never know where I stand with you.”

“I think you know.”

“No, I don’t. You can be so kind to me one minute, then the next you’re talking about punishing me. Then out of the blue, you kiss me, but you pull away just as fast.”

“This is where you stand. Until December thirtieth, you belong to me. Period.”

He opened the pizza box and said, “Come on, little bee, let’s eat.”

She picked the plates up from the table and handed him one, then took a step back.

“Go ahead,” he said, encouraging her to serve herself first.

Plucking a piece and setting it on her plate, she grumbled, “Why do I feel like this is my last meal?”

He chuckled as he put three pieces on his plate before sitting down at the table, kitty-corner from her where she was seated.

“I’m not going to punish you tonight, baby.”

“You’re not?”

“No. You have to work in the morning. You’re going to need your rest. But don’t make any plans for this weekend.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

She was naked when she climbed into bed—per the set of rules they’d established.

He pulled her against him and kissed her temple.

“I’ve got a dinner meeting tomorrow, so I won’t be home until late. Maybe you can leave work a little early and go dress shopping? You’ve been wanting to see your friend. Perhaps you two could go to dinner?”

His suggestion surprised her, and she rested her hand on his chest while looking up at him with raised brows.

“You don’t want to go with me to pick out my dress?”

“I think you know what I like, baby. I trust you to find something sexy, yet classy.”

Classy and sexy. She could do that. Except…
